Metro Transit’s Green Line debuts June 14

You’ll soon have another option when you travel between Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Metro Transit’s new 11-mile light rail line officially opens with a day of celebrations Saturday, June 14.

The Green Line runs from Target Field station in downtown Minneapolis to the Union Depot station in downtown Saint Paul with 23 convenient stops along the way. As a City employee, you can enroll in the Metropass program for unlimited bus and light rail rides at a discounted price of $60 a month. Payment for the Metropass is made through pre-tax payroll deductions.

Green Line opening day celebration events

Celebrate the line’s opening by boarding the train for free and stopping at any of these events along the route.

Target Field station, Minneapolis
Live music, games and restaurant taste samples

The Target Field station will offer live music, interactive games with the Timberwolves and Lynx, visits with TC Bear and tasting samples from Warehouse District and North Loop restaurants.

West Bank station, Minneapolis
East African festival and theater tours

This celebration includes an East African community festival, tours of local theaters and a dance performance.  

Stadium Village station, Minneapolis
Sports-themed activities, music and restaurant taste samples

This event will feature appearances by Vikings and Gophers mascots and cheerleaders, family sports activities, live music and tasting samples from Stadium Village restaurants.

Raymond Avenue station, Saint Paul
Art activities, food trucks, music and strolling performers

Public art is the focus at this event, where local artists are crafting windsocks, art bikes, shade structures and a garden of flowerpots. Visitors can join artists in a mural painting project. Food trucks, musicians and strolling performers are also planned.  

Hamline Avenue station, Saint Paul
State Fair-themed activities

A State Fair-themed event will feature a midway, kidway, grandstand and international bazaar as well as animal educators from Como Park Zoo and the Choo Choo Bob Show. A “coupon-on-a-stick” promotion will encourage people to explore restaurants via a fleet of pedicabs.

Victoria Street station, Saint Paul
Art, culture and history celebration

This event showcases the art, culture and history of the Rondo, Summit-U and Frogtown neighborhoods. Enjoy barbeque, music, dance, youth performances, history exhibits and bike activities.

Western Avenue station, Saint Paul
Asian food and vendors, arts and crafts, performances and history display

At this station, Explore Little Mekong will kick-off its summer-long Asian Night Market which features 50 food and retail vendors. The celebration also features performances, arts and crafts exhibits, and a neighborhood history display.

Central station, downtown Saint Paul
Outdoor music stage, mini-golf tournament

Enjoy an outdoor music stage and the Skyway Open mini-golf tournament that will allow visitors to explore skyway businesses and restaurants between the Central Station and Union Depot.

Union Depot station, Saint Paul
Ribbon cutting, live music, art and depot tours

After the 10 a.m. official ribbon cutting, there will be a full day of live music programmed by The Current, a gallery of Lowertown artists and a display of finalists from the Green Line commemorative poster contest, along with Union Depot tours and historical information.
