The results of the 2012 Minneapolis Resident Survey are in

Minneapolis residents continue to rank the city as a great place to live, according to the results of the 2012 Minneapolis Resident Survey. Additionally, nearly all residents (96 percent) said they were satisfied (79 percent) or very satisfied (17 percent) with the overall quality of City services.

According to the survey results, which were presented at the City Council’s Feb. 20 Committee of the Whole meeting, 91 percent of Minneapolis residents rate the city as a very good (57 percent) or good (34 percent) place to live.

Among the survey’s findings:

Satisfaction with City services

Among City services, residents gave their highest satisfaction ratings to fire protection and emergency services (98 percent were either satisfied or very satisfied), sewer services (96 percent), 311 for City services and information (96 percent) park and recreation services (95 percent), and Animal Control programs (92 percent).

Although a majority of residents were satisfied or very satisfied with all City services, the services that received the lowest ratings were repairing streets (70 percent, up from 40 percent in 2011), affordable housing development (70 percent) and mortgage foreclosure assistance (60 percent).

Importance of City services

When residents were asked to prioritize how important City services are to them, the highest prioritized services included fire protection and emergency medical response (94 percent of respondents ranked this a 4, or “extremely important,” on a 1-5 scale of importance), providing quality drinking water (90 percent) and police services (89 percent).

Greatest challenges

Residents were asked to name the three biggest challenges Minneapolis will face in the next five years. The three most commonly mentioned responses were public safety (32 percent), education (30 percent), and transportation-related issues (28 percent).

Perceptions of Downtown safety

Residents’ perceptions of safety in downtown Minneapolis are high. 87 percent of residents reported feeling very safe or somewhat safe Downtown.

Use of 311

The 2012 survey is the third survey done since the launch of Minneapolis 311, the non-emergency phone number for City information and services. More than two-thirds (70 percent) of 2012 respondents reported they are either very familiar (26 percent) or somewhat familiar (44 percent) with Minneapolis 311 up from 59 percent in 2008 when the question was first asked. Of those that had called 311, 95 percent were satisfied or very satisfied with the professionalism shown by the 311 agent.

About the survey

The 2012 Minneapolis Resident Survey was conducted by phone and included surveys of 1,378 people between Oct. 11, 2012 and Nov. 28, 2012, and it follows similar surveys in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008 and 2011. The survey was conducted by National Research Center, Inc.

The City regularly conducts these surveys to learn what residents think about the quality of life in the City and how satisfied they are with City government services. Survey results are used by City departments in project planning and goal setting.

The survey gives residents the opportunity to rate the quality of life in the city, as well as service delivery and their satisfaction with local government. The survey also gives residents the opportunity to provide feedback to government on what is working well and what areas need improvement, and to share their priorities for community planning and resource allocation.
