Voter pre-registration deadline is Oct. 16
Next month Minnesota voters will decide who is elected to a number of offices, including U.S. president and vice president, U.S. senator, U.S. representative as well as state senators and state representatives. Voters will also decide the fate of two proposals to amend the Minnesota Constitution and elect people to county, school and judicial offices.
If you want to vote in the Nov. 6 general election, but you’re not a registered voter the City’s Elections Office reminds you that pre-registering is an easy way to save time at the polls on Election Day. But be sure to act quickly: applications must be received by elections officials by 5 p.m. on Oct. 16.
Registered voters who changed their name or moved (even from one apartment to another apartment in the same building) since they last voted must re-register.
Voter registration applications can be picked up at the Minneapolis Elections Office, Hennepin County Government Center, or at any suburban city hall. The Voter Registration application is also available on the Secretary of State’s website.
Voters who newly register or update their registration will receive a postcard notifying them where to vote.
Individuals are eligible in Minnesota to vote if they:
- Will be at least 18 years old by Election Day
- Are a U.S. citizen
- Have lived in Minnesota for at least 20 days prior to the election.
If you aren’t sure if you’re a registered voter, you can use the Minnesota Voter Registration Lookup on the Secretary of State’s website to confirm you are registered. Website users enter their name, birthday and address and the site will quickly tell the person whether they are registered at their current address.
