Take advantage of free library workshops, presentations and performances
In the coming weeks, the Hennepin County Library - Minneapolis Central is offering free workshops on PowerPoint, eBooks and genealogy research. The library is also hosting a photography exhibit, One Read presentations, a string quartet performance and an author event.
Author, Author: Photography Exhibit

This exhibit is a stunning display of more than 50 intimate and original portraits of writers, screenwriters and playwrights by Michael Childers, who is one of the entertainment industry's most renowned and highly respected portrait and art photographers.

One Minneapolis One Read: The Spirit Lake Massacre of 1857

Author Mary Bakeman will discuss the 1857 Spirit Lake Massacre. Inkpaduta's 1857 attack on Spirit Lake, Iowa, and southwest Minnesota is often cited as a cause of the 1862 Dakota War. Presented in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Public Schools in support of the annual "One Minneapolis, One Read" event.

Minneapolis artist Scott Seekins will present the cultural and religious aspects of the 1862 Dakota War and the different perceptions and expectations of the settlers and the Native Americans. Samples of his art that illustrate these aspects of the conflict will be on display. This program is presented in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Public Schools in support of the annual "One Minneapolis, One Read" event.

Artaria String Quartet

Talk of the Stacks With Michael Chabon

Novelist, screenwriter, columnist and short-story writer Chabon is widely considered one of the most celebrated writers of his generation. He also authored the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay," and other books. His newest book, "Telegraph Avenue" explores the intertwined lives of two families – one black and one white – in Oakland, California. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Seating is first-come, first served. Doors open at 6:15 p.m.
One Minneapolis One Read: The U.S. – Dakota War

Senior historian Stephen Osman at historic Fort Snelling for three-plus decades will discuss the 1862 Dakota War using original artwork to study the questions of how we should remember these tragic events 150 years later. Presented in collaboration with the City of Minneapolis and Minneapolis Public Schools in support of the annual "One Minneapolis, One Read" event.
