City will offer instant messaging and Web conferencing services to employees
Information Technology is currently testing new instant messaging and Web conferencing software with the goal of making these new services available to City employees sometime this fall.
The software — Microsoft Lync 2010 — offers:
- Instant messaging is real-time communication that is similar to a telephone conversation, but uses text rather than voice. (Photos can also be shared via instant messaging.) Instant messaging is different than sending an email because everyone invited to the online chat knows that the other invitees are participating at that moment.
- Web conferencing enables a group of people to meet via the internet. Web conference participants can see and talk with one another in real time.
- Sharing desktops allows participants in an instant messaging conversation or a web conference to see your computer screen during the conversation or meeting.
