Aquatennial fun is just around the corner

Now entering its 73rd year, Minneapolis’ official civic celebration — the Aquatennial — is just around the corner. Now’s the time to mark your calendar so you don’t miss any of the July 13 – 21 events.

Twin Cities River Rats Aquatennial Water Ski Show
Saturday, July 14
3 p.m.
Mississippi River, West Bank along West River Road between Broadway & Plymouth Avenues

The Twin Cities River Rats Water Ski Show Team will perform a free, hour-long ski show on the Mississippi River.

Minneapolis Sister Cities Day Celebration
Sunday, July 15
1 – 5 p.m.
Nicollet Island Pavilion

An afternoon celebrating Minneapolis’ Sister City relationships with Santiago, Chile; Kuopio, Finland; Ibaraki City, Japan; Novosibirsk, Russia; Tours, France; Harbin, China; Uppsala, Sweden; Eldoret, Kenya; Cuernavaca, Mexico; and Najaf, Iraq. This free family event features multicultural entertainment, activities, make-your-own ice cream sundaes and refreshments.

Star Tribune Beach Bash
Sunday, July 15
10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Thomas Beach, Lake Calhoun

Featured events include the sandcastle competition, milk carton boat races, a blood drive, and voyageur canoe paddling instruction. Throughout the Beach Bash, Minneapolis firefighters will be staffing a lakeside booth so visitors can see the Fire Department’s air boat, try on a firefighter’s turnout gear and practice aiming a water pump. 

Pre-parade Party: Family Fun Night
Wednesday, July 18
5 – 7:30 p.m.
Loring Park, 1382 Willow St., Minneapolis

Get ready for the parade by joining in the family fun with a BBQ, DJ, pony rides, carnival games, inflatable bounces, Chicks on Sticks and KidsDance at Loring Park

CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade
Wednesday, July 18
8:30 - 10:30 p.m.
Hennepin Avenue, between the Dunwoody College of Technology & 5th Street

The CenterPoint Energy Torchlight Parade will illuminate downtown with bands and floats. The Fire Department will be driving a fire rig and airboat in the parade, and the Minneapolis Police Band will be performing.

Target Fireworks with pre-firework festivities
Saturday, July 21
6 – 10:30 p.m.
West River Parkway along the Mississippi River, Minneapolis

One of the largest annual firework shows in the country, fireworks will light up the sky. In addition to the fireworks at 10 p.m., enjoy live music beginning at 6 p.m. between Portland Avenue and the 3rd Avenue Bridge.
