Every month through August, the Minneapolis Bicycling and Pedestrian Program is hosting free events aimed at helping folks of all ages find new ways to enjoy Minneapolis’ many bicycling and walking opportunities. Programs are led by staff from the City of Minneapolis’ Bike Walk Ambassador and are designed to meet a wide range of needs and interests. Programs include social walking groups, family bike rides, safety clinics and neighborhood bike tours. Information about the programs offered in in the next few weeks is listed below. Saturday, June 23 – 9 a.m. Saturday, July 21 – 9 a.m. To celebrate the growing presence of kids and families on bikes, rides to family-friendly destinations are offered at different parks around the city. Rides are typically three miles at a 5 - 6 mph pace on quiet residential streets. The ride is paced to travel as fast as its slowest riders. Helmets are required. This ride will include Wirth Parkway, Bassett’s Creek Parkway and the Sculpture Garden. Thursday, July 12 – 6 p.m. Saturday, July 22 - 10 a.m. Learn how to ride confidently, safely and enjoy bicycling as a lifetime activity. This bicycling class is for people 55+ community members will cover getting started, types of cycles, basic maintenance and upkeep, rules of the road and trip planning. Wednesday, June 27 - 10 a.m. Learn how to ride confidently, safely and enjoy bicycling as a lifetime activity. Wednesday, July 11 - 10 a.m. (Nothing scheduled on July 4 Holiday) Wednesday, July 18 - 10 a.m. These strolls are designed to offer an easy, pleasant social walking experience and give you the confidence to consider walking as a transportation option. The health benefits of walking are numerous including reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity. Take a comfortable and gradual approach.
