Special events help folks learn about bicycling and walking opportunities
Every month through the end of August, the Minneapolis Bicycling and Pedestrian Program is hosting free events aimed at helping folks of all ages find new ways to enjoy Minneapolis’ many bicycling and walking opportunities.
Programs are led by staff from the City of Minneapolis’ Bike Walk Ambassador and are designed to meet a wide range of needs and interests. Programs include social walking groups, family bike rides, safety clinics, neighborhood bike tours and bike maintenance classes.

Walking Wednesdays, 55+
Wednesday, May 2 - 10 a.m.
Walker Library, Hennepin and Lagoon Avenues
Wednesday, May 16 - 10 a.m.
Linden Hills & Lake Harriet, meet at Sheridan Avenue and 44th Street W
Walking Wednesday strolls offer a 1½ to 2 mile social walking experience designed to give participants the confidence to consider walking as a transportation option. Strolls are offered at various locations on the first and third Wednesday of the month.
Neighborhood Bicycle Tours
Tuesday, May 8 – 6 p.m.
Todd Park, Chicago Ave S & E 56th St
Saturday, May 19 – 10 a.m.
Midtown Global Market, 10th Avenue entrance
Do you want to get out and ride, but you don’t feel comfortable sharing the road with cars? This class will teach you about finding a route, planning trips and riding safely and comfortably with traffic. We will ride some of Minneapolis’ great bikeways and make stops at bike-friendly businesses. All rides are easy-paced; please bring bike lights for the 6 p.m. class.
Saturday Family Safety Series
Saturday, May 12 – 9:30 a.m.
Windom Recreation Center, 2251 Hayes St NE
This clinic will teach adults and kids how to make sure their bikes are in working order, identify possible mechanical problems and make simple repairs. Once your bike is ready to ride, participants will go on a short ride. Helmets are required for all Family Safety Series riders.
Saturday, May 19 – 9 a.m.
Meet outside the Logan Park rec center to decorate bikes at 9 a.m.; then parade down 13th Avenue NE and ride some of the new Northeast bikeways.
To celebrate the growing presence of kids and families on bikes, rides to family-friendly destinations are offered at different parks around the city. Rides are typically three miles at a 5 - 6 mph pace on quiet residential streets. The ride is paced to travel as fast as its slowest riders. Helmets are required.
Bike Minneapolis, 55+
Wednesday, May 23 - 10 a.m.
East Side Neighborhood Services, 1700 2nd Street NE
Learn how to ride confidently, safely and enjoy bicycling as a lifetime activity. This bicycling class is for people 55+ community members will cover getting started, types of cycles, basic maintenance and upkeep, rules of the road and trip planning.
Basic Bike Maintenance
Thursday, May 24 – 7 p.m.
Recovery Bike Shop, 2555 Central Avenue NE
Keeping your bike working isn’t rocket science, but it does take a little know-how and occasional grimy hands. This class discusses tire inflation, brake adjustment, cleaning and lubricating a bike chain, and how to change a tire tube. Participants will receive free inner tube patch kits.
