Public hearings on redistricting set for Feb. 29 and March 1

The public has a chance to review draft redistricting maps and share their input at public meetings on Feb. 29 and March 1. This year, people in Minneapolis have a onceinadecade opportunity to participate in redistricting the city, creating boundaries for elections in 2012 and beyond. It’s an important process, because having districts with equal populations helps ensure there is fair representation no matter where you live. Redistricting happens every ten years, following the U.S. Census, and for residents who are interested, there are many opportunities to play an important role in the redistricting process that’s about to start.

The upcoming public hearings are:

Wednesday, Feb. 29
5 - 7 p.m.
Webber Community Center, 4400 Dupont Ave. N.

Thursday, March 1
5 - 7 p.m.
Hosmer Library, 347 E. 36th St.

For information about the redistricting process, including timelines and the work of the Redistricting Group, see the new Redistricting 2012 website at www.minneapolismn.gov/redistricting2012. Draft maps are also available on the website. Anyone who is interested in learning more about redistricting can also view a video on the redistricting web page that explains the process in detail.
