$25 “storm re-leaf” trees ordering deadline extended

Minneapolis homeowners affected by the June 21 severe storm still have a chance to order a $25 tree to plant on their private properties. The ordering deadline has been extended to 8 a.m., Sept. 23 (earlier if the trees sell out first). To order a tree or to get more information, visit www.treetrust.org. The City of Minneapolis is offering about 500 low-cost trees to Minneapolis homeowners who lost trees on their properties during the June 21 severe storm.

Three species of trees are still available for order: hackberry, Heritage oak (English oak and Bur oak cross) and Regal Prince oak.

Homeowners who order trees will pick them up in late September. Tree pickup will take place 2-7 p.m., Thursday, Sept 26, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Sept 28 at the Minneapolis Impound Lot, 51 Colfax Ave. N. If the purchaser is unable to pick up the tree, they are encouraged to have someone else pick up their tree on their behalf. Volunteers will be available at the pickup location to help load each tree and a complimentary bag of mulch.

Tree Trust will hold a tree planting and care workshop free for participants from 6-7 p.m., Sept. 23, at McRae Park, 906 E. 47th St.

The Park Board estimates 3,000 trees on public land were destroyed or damaged in that storm; the number on private property is not known.

The City still plans its regular spring tree distribution for property owners citywide.

Homeowners who lost a tree in the June 21 storm can find more information and order their tree at www.treetrust.org.
