Crews respond to water main break that has disrupted water service to a wide area
City crews are responding to a water main break that has affected water service over a wide area of the city, south of the Mississippi River and as far south as Lake of the Isles.
At about 2:30 p.m. private contractors working on development project at Hennepin Avenue and 2nd Street North struck and ruptured a 36-in water main that delivers water to a large portion of the city. City crews are now working to isolate the break so that water service can be restored to the vast majority of the affected customers. Most businesses and residents who are experiencing a disruption in service are expected to have water service restored this evening.
It will take longer to restore service in the immediate area around the break, generally along 2nd Street from 3rd Avenue North to Marquette Avenue South. At this time, it is not known how long those four blocks may be without water.
Some portions of downtown Minneapolis are affected by the break. Because the break has released a large volume of water, several streets in the immediate area are closed for the time being, including Hennepin Avenue from Washington Avenue to the river. Drivers are advised to avoid the area around Hennepin and 2nd Streets.
