20,000 books to be given away June 12 to kick off youth "Summer Strong 2012" program

As part of Summer Strong 2012, a program spearheaded by the Minneapolis Public Schools with local community partners including the City of Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Public Schools will give away 20,000 books and provide free meals on Tuesday, June 12.

The book giveaways and meals will be held at four Minneapolis parks and will also feature MPS’ Mobile Emergency Response Bus. At the events, families can enroll children for summer school, which begins June 18 for students in grades K-8. Representatives from Minneapolis Public Schools, the City of Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Police Department, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Hennepin County Library and the Minneapolis Youth Coordinating Board will be available to answer questions about summer resources and activities.

The events take place at the following parks:

9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Lucy Laney/Cleveland Park

noon - 2 p.m.
Pillsbury/Windom NE Park
2251 Hayes St. NE

2:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Andersen/Stewart
2700 12th Ave. S.

5-7 p.m.
Green Central
3416 4th Ave. S.

Summer Strong 2012 is spearheaded by MPS, with local community partners including the City of Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Police Department, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Hennepin County and the Minneapolis Youth Coordinating Board. Four key areas are highlighted: summer school, youth and adult activities, basic needs and safety. Resources are accessible online. Resource guides were mailed to homes citywide and are now available at schools, parks, libraries and community locations.

Summer school registration forms are available on the MPS website or at your child’s school. Classes are Monday through Thursday June 18 through August 2. Breakfast and lunch are served daily at no additional charge and transportation is available. Call 612.668.5388 for more information.
