Between 1980 and 2000, Whittier's population in the labor force (those in the civilian labor force and in the armed forces) has increased steadily. The proportion of people in the labor force in the neighborhood is higher than in the city for all three decades. In 2000, 78 percent of Whittier's population over the age of 16 was in the labor force, compared to 72 percent in Minneapolis.
Whittier has had a higher unemployment rate than Minneapolis. In 2000, however, the neighborhood's unemployment rate dropped to 5.2 percent compared to the citywide unemployment rate of 5.8 percent.
