West Calhoun's percentage of people below the poverty level between 1979 and 1999 followed the citywide trend but ran consistently lower. The percentages of people 65 and older living below the poverty level did not follow the same trends. The neighborhood was below Minneapolis in 1979 and 1999, but in 1989 it peaked higher than the city percentage.
The percentage of families living in poverty and families with children living in poverty was much lower in West Calhoun than Minneapolis from 1979 to 1999. During this period, none of the neighborhood families with children lived below the poverty level.
