West Calhoun's population increased nearly 17 percent between 1980 and 2000 compared to a 3.1 percent increase in Minneapolis.

The West Calhoun population was younger in 2000 than 1980. The neighborhood's child and adult populations increased 10 percent and 34 percent respectively, while the senior population, particularly the people between 65 and 84 years old, decreased 45 percent.

The populations of all ethnic groups in West Calhoun, with the exception of American Indians, increased between 1980 and 2000. And although there were more white residents in 2000, they made up a smaller percentage – 89 percent – of the population than their 96 percent in 1980. In 2000, Asians were the second largest ethnic group at 4 percent of the neighborhood population.
