The average household size was consistently lower in West Calhoun than Minneapolis between 1980 and 2000.

West Calhoun's total number of households increased 20 percent between 1980 and 2000. The neighborhood's largest household type throughout this period was households of people who live alone and are under age 65, which increased 40 percent between 1980 and 2000 to become 50 percent of the households in 2000.

The percentage of householders living alone was much higher in West Calhoun than Minneapolis between 1980 and 2000, and the percentage increased for both the neighborhood and the city.

The percentage of seniors living alone was higher in West Calhoun than Minneapolis between 1980 and 2000 and increased well above the citywide percentage.

The percentage of families with children under 18 was considerably lower in West Calhoun than Minneapolis between 1980 and 2000. It increased in the neighborhood from 8 percent in 1980 to 18 percent in 1990 and did not change in 2000. In comparison, 50 percent of the families in Minneapolis had children under 18 in 2000.
