Between 1980 and 2000, Waite Park's population declined by 16 percent while Minneapolis' population grew.

In 2000 there were fewer children, adolescents and senior residents in Waite Park than in 1980 as the neighborhood population declined. There were, however, about 460 additional residents between the ages of 25 and 44. The growth in this demographic was not enough to counterbalance a general loss of almost 990 residents.

Waite Park's ethnic makeup has changed moderately since 1980. The neighborhood has become more ethnically diverse, while the white population decreased by more than 1,500 people. The populations of other ethnic groups, including blacks, Asians and Hispanics, grew considerably in the two decades, adding about 530 people. These gains were not enough to counterbalance the loss of the white population.
