Between 1980 and 2000, the population around University decreased by 4 percent, while the overall population in Minneapolis went up by about 3.1 percent.

As it would be expected from a university neighborhood, the overwhelming majority of the population – 97 percent – falls within the 18- to 24-year-old age group. While the overall population decreased between 1980 and 2000, the number of 18- to 24-year-olds increased by 4 percent.

University's ethnic makeup changed modestly between 1980 and 2000. The neighborhood's population was 93 percent white in 1980 and 87 percent in 2000. The Asian population, which accounted for 3.4 percent of the neighborhood population in 1980, had the greatest increase in percentage and number. By 2000, Asian residents made up 5.2 percent of University's population, followed by blacks and Hispanics with 3.2 percent and 2.4 percent respectively.
