Between 1980 and 2000, the Tangletown population shrank by 11 percent. In 1990 it had 319 fewer residents than it had in 1980, and between 1990 and 2000 it lost 200 more. In contrast, the city increased by 3.1 percent between 1980 and 2000.

Between 1980 and 2000, Tangletown's population increased by 300 adults between the ages of 45 and 65, but that could not make up for losses in all of the other age groups. The population of children and adolescents decreased in 2000 by 26 percent, and the senior population decreased by 34 percent.

Although the neighborhood is overwhelmingly white (90 percent of the population in 2000), it is changing. Between 1980 and 2000, the black population added 53 more residents. There were also 45 more Hispanics, 24 more Asians and 11 more American Indians in 2000 than in 1980.
