Poverty

In 1989, almost half of all people living in the Phillips community earned incomes below the poverty level. By 1999 that figure decreased to 34 percent. Between 1979 and 1999, approximately 27 percent of people age 65 and over living in Phillips lived below the poverty level.

The percentage of people living in poverty is persistently higher in the Phillips area than in the City of Minneapolis. In 1989, 50 percent of all families in Phillips lived in poverty. By 1999, 32 percent did. In 1989, 63 percent of families with children under 18 lived in poverty. By 1999 that figure had dropped to 38 percent.
