Northrop neighborhood experienced a 9.1 percent decline in population between 1980 and 2000. This is in contrast to the 3.1 percent increase in the citywide population during the same time period.

Between 1980 and 2000 the adult population in Northrop increased by 6 percent, but at the same time, the populations decreased for children and adolescents (by 14 percent) and seniors (by 52 percent).

The ethnic makeup of Northrop has changed substantially between 1980 and 2000. White people made up 94 percent of the population in 1980; this percentage declined in 1990 to 89 percent and to 80 percent in 2000. During this same time period all other ethnic groups at least doubled in the number of people living in the neighborhood.
