In 1979, 45 percent of Nicollet Island/East Bank residents lived under the poverty level while 14 percent of Minneapolis residents did. Twenty years later, the number of residents living in poverty in the neighborhood decreased to 4 percent, while citywide the percentage increased to 17 percent. In 1999, the percentage of families living below the poverty level in Nicollet Island/East Bank neighborhood was 2 percent, and the percentage of families in poverty with children was 12 percent. The percentage of families living below the poverty level in Minneapolis increased from 9 percent to 12 percent, and the Minneapolis percentage of families living in poverty with children increased from 16 percent to 19 percent.
