Between 1980 and 2000, Nicollet Island/East Bank's labor force participation rate – the percentage of people over 16 who had a job or were looking for one – increased, as did the city's. In 2000, 81 percent of the neighborhood's population over the age of 16 had a job or was looking for one. In Minneapolis, 72 percent was in the labor force.
In 2000, Nicollet Island/East Bank had a slightly higher unemployment rate at 6.3 percent than Minneapolis had at 5.8 percent.
