Between 1980 and 2000, Howe lost 5 percent of its population while Minneapolis gained 3.1 percent.

Howe neighborhood's population declined in almost every age group except for those 25 to 64 years old. This group grew by more than 19 percent. However, the populations in all other age groups declined, including a loss of 47 percent of senior residents. The overall adult population expanded by 7 percent.

The ethnic makeup of the population in Howe changed between 1980 and 2000. Howe's white population made up 94 percent of the neighborhood's total population in 1980, but it fell to 76 percent in 2000. All other ethnic groups increased. One of the more substantial increases came with the Hispanic population, which reached 6 percent of the total population in 2000, while it had been less than 1 percent in 1980.
