Between 1980 and 2000, Downtown East's labor force participation rate increased, as did the citywide rate. In 2000, 75 percent of Downtown East's population over the age of 16 had a job or was looking for one. In Minneapolis 72 percent of residents over the age of 16 participated in the labor force.
In 2000, Downtown East had a lower unemployment rate than Minneapolis. Downtown East's unemployment rate was 2.5 percent, compared to Minneapolis' at 5.8 percent.
