Diamond Lake's population gradually declined over the past 20 years. The population was 5,760 in 1980 and 5,251 in 2000. This contrasts with population trends for the City of Minneapolis, which grew by 3 percent between 1980 and 2000.

Population losses since 1980 can be attributed to declining numbers of children, adolescents and seniors. Two age groups, people 18 to 24 and people 45 to 64, shrank from 1980 to 2000, although the latter rebounded after its low point in 1990.

Diamond Lake is primarily composed of white residents, but the neighborhood is diversifying. In 1980, 96 percent of the residents were white. By 2000, that number had dropped 18 percent. All other groups grew during that 20-year period, with blacks and Hispanics comprising the largest of these populations.
