Join us on March 24 to begin
implementing a common vision for a
successful North Minneapolis.

Convened by the Northside Neighborhoods Council

Overview

March 24 will be the first of several gatherings of northside residents, leaders and agencies who share a common goal of revitalizing and developing north Minneapolis neighborhoods into a vibrant, sustainable, healthy and unified community. The objective will be to work together to implement a common vision through intentional community planning with robust resident participation.

Participants

Interested and committed residents, neighborhood organization boards of directors, non-profit agencies that are presently working in north Minneapolis, city department representation, other municipal government representatives, philanthropic partners and other institutional and cultural group representatives.

Activities

Group Discussions on three broad topics:

1.     Housing and Transportation

2.     Economic Development

3.     Arts and Recreation

Discussions

What are we all working toward? What plans and studies have already been done? What resources are available? What are we willing to commit to?

Follow Up

Regular reconvening of work groups, and ongoing events leading to a common vision for a successful North Minneapolis plan.

Northside Neighborhoods Council

Purpose of NNC: To ensure the diverse racial, cultural and economic communities of North Minneapolis have full inclusion in visioning, planning and building an equitable North Minneapolis.

The Northside Neighborhood Collaborative will do its work based on the following principles.

  1. Right to Community Self-Determination: Individually and collectively Northside residents have the capacity and power to shape and actively create their own future.
  2. Collaboration: No single group has the capacity or the mandate to create the needed long-term change in North Minneapolis. The NNC will actively seek out and encourage cross-sector partnerships that advance a shared vision of an equitable North Minneapolis.
  3. Equitable Development: The principle is to ensure that everyone-regardless of the neighborhood in which they live-has access to essential ingredients for economic and social success: living-wage jobs, viable housing choices, public transportation, good schools, strong social networks, safe and walkable streets, services, parks, access to healthy food, and so on. (Policy Link)
  4. Build Community Capacity: Strengthen the ability of residents and local organizations to mobilize resources, talent, and institutional support to drive both short and long-term change in North Minneapolis that benefits the full diversity of the community.
  5. Community Benefit: Localize the economic exchange to benefit individuals and businesses of North Minneapolis

Definition of equitable development (Refined from PolicyLink definition):

Equitable development creates healthy, vibrant, communities of opportunity where all residents including people of lower income and people of color participate in and benefit from decisions that shape their neighborhood and region.
