Open Eye Puppet Show and Little Free Library Opening on Friday, July 27

See the Adventures of Juan Bobo, a puppet show performed by Open Eye Puppet Theatre. The new Little Free Library will also be unveiled. Bring a book and some unique objects from your home that best represent you, your story, and your community for the Curiosities of Lyndale project.

Red Hot Art on Saturday, July 28 and Sunday, July 29

The city’s premier grass roots arts festival, Red Hot Art, is a weekend long event that serves as a showcase for emerging Twin Cities artists, offering them and arts enthusiasts alike the opportunity to create flourishing relationships through support and networking. The festival also provides a way to reclaim the park for neighborhood residents and local families. Red Hot Art is presented by the Stevens Square Community Organization (SSCO), one of the longest running community organizations in the city.

B.L.E.N.D. Award  - nominations due on Monday, July 30

The B.L.E.N.D. Award encourages and rewards builders, architects, and home owners to blend newly remodeled or constructed homes and businesses into the fabric of Minneapolis neighborhoods. Eligible projects include new buildings, renovation or additions to existing buildings, and landscape projects that have been completed since July 1, 2007.  New this year is the EcoB.L.E.N.D. Award. (Ecologically Conscience Buildings and Landscapes Enhancing the Neighborhood through Design) presented in partnership with Linden Hills Power and Light (LHP&L). B.L.E.N.D. is sponsored by the Fulton Neighborhood Association in partnership with other Minneapolis neighborhoods.

Cleveland Neighborhood Association awarded $20,000 grant for Neighborhood Adventure League

Congratulations to the Cleveland Neighborhood Association on their award of a $20,000 grant through the Connect for Health Challenge from The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation.  The Neighborhood Adventure League (NAL) brings residents of the Cleveland Neighborhood from a variety of backgrounds together under the guise of friendly competition to engage in activities that will build and strengthen relationships as neighbors have shared positive experiences.

North Side Synagogues and Neighborhood – Preserve Minneapolis Tour on Sunday, July 29

This tour highlights the history and architecture of some of the gathering places of North Minneapolis’ Jewish community in the early and mid-20th century. Visit a neighborhood with three synagogues, the Emmanuel Cohen Community Center, and the Jewish Shelter Home for Children. Learn about the areas visited and the communities that have gathered here. "Ded Unk'unpi - We Are Here" opens on Friday, August 3

When the prisoners were hanged, they called out their names and said, "I am here!" - Gwen Westerman Wiscuna, Dakota Artist and Scholar

2012 marks the 150th anniversary of the largest mass execution in the history of the United States. On December 26th, 1862, 38 Dakota warriors were sentenced and hung as a result of the U.S./Dakota wars. This timely and important exhibit features works by 20 Native American artists whose work responds to the legacy of these events.

Uptown Art Fair on Friday, August 3 – Sunday, August 5

An average of 375,000 people attend annually, making the Art Fair #2 in statewide event attendance, second only to the Minnesota State Fair. The Fair features over 350 fine artists from around the world, festival food and ice-cold beverages from over 20 vendors, and interactive art activities at the Family Imagination Station.

Sister Spokesman - Fashion Show and Clothing Drive on Saturday, August 4

Sister Spokesman is a free monthly event designed to bring African American women of all ages together in a relaxing environment for networking. U of M: The Old Campus Historic District – Preserve Minneapolis Tour on Wednesday, August 8

The University of Minnesota has had several major periods of development ranging from Horace Cleveland’s 1892 plan to Cass Gilbert’s Northrop Mall to the 1970s development of the West Bank campus. Join architect Bob Mack in a walking tour looking at the campus development and buildings from the earliest years up to the 1950s.

Community Garden Day on Saturday, August 11

Community Garden Day is a way to learn directly from community gardeners about these community spaces and get to know your community a little better in the process! Over 20 gardens the City of Minneapolis will be on display. Among those participating is the Como Corner at 22nd and Como, which is celebrating its 20th Anniversary.

Historic Park Avenue Part I: The Mansion District Age of Opulence Along the Minneapolis Golden Mile – New Peserve Minneapolis Tour on Saturday, August 11

Originally designed to be a stylish promenade of large urban estates offering oversized lots, wide boulevards, and generous setbacks, at the turn of the last century, Park Avenue was ranked as one of Minneapolis’s most prestigious residential streets. By the end of the 1960s, “urban renewal,” in the form of demolition, had claimed 80% of this area’s opulent mansions. Experience the remaining eight mansions up close—including some interiors—and discover those that have been lost through historic photographs and information about

their famous first occupants.

Red Cedar Lane with homes designed by Wm. Purcell – Preserve Minneapolis Tour on Sunday, August 12

Red Cedar Lane, one of the most beautiful secrets in the Twin Cities, was laid out by architect John Jager beginning in 1904. Jager planted red cedars along the street that now form a luxuriant and aromatic canopy that makes the street seem like an outdoor room. The area has Jager’s own house and several others designed by William Gray Purcell and Frederick Strauel. The tour begins with a short slide lecture to introduce these designers and their architecture.

This year, the Laotian American National Alliance (LANA) will hold its third Laotian National Conference in Minneapolis. Native American Somali Peacemakers awarded $100,000 from the Connect for Health Challenge

A big congratulations goes to Native American Somali Peacemakers (NASP), recipient of a grant of $100,000 to strengthen social connections! The grant is through the Connect for Health Challenge from The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Foundation. NASP is an extension of the Native American Somali Friendship Committee, an active group in the Cedar Riverside and Phillips neighborhoods of Minneapolis that addresses growing intercultural tension by building community through collaboration.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28

Hennepin County organizes collection events throughout the year to give residents more convenient, local disposal options for their household hazardous wastes. The county is in the process of creating its first official pedestrian plan. The pedestrian plan will ultimately become part of the overall Hennepin County Transportation Systems Plan, as well as complement the county’s Complete Streets policy.
