Neighborhood and Community Connections Conference Call for Workshop Proposals – November 14 deadline
You’re invited to present your best at this 1st annual Neighborhood & Community Connections Conference – Better Communities through Neighborhoods! The February 11, 2011 conference is designed to showcase and build successful community collaborations between neighborhoods, cultural communities, residents, and the City. A major theme of the conference is to build diversity and capacity in neighborhood organizations and communities by providing new and innovative ideas through collaboration and participation. Don’t miss this opportunity to share your experiences and network with other neighborhood-minded activists from throughout our city.

Is the tornado still causing you stress or anxiety? There’s help
The Recovery from the tornado can be very challenging for many people, and the response or reaction can vary from individual to individual. But whatever your situation, there is help available. For assistance and referral, call the Tornado Recovery Hotline at 612-787-3730. Families can call NorthPoint Behavioral Health at 612-543-2566 to get information about NorthPoint services or for an appointment.
Northside Neighborhood Collaborative (NNC) Seeks Consultant – October 7 deadline
The Northside Neighborhood Collaborative is a collaboration of six neighborhood associations working to ensure the diverse racial, cultural and economic communities of North Minneapolis have full inclusion in visioning, planning and building an equitable North Minneapolis. The Collaborative was organized shortly after the May 22 tornado. The Collaborative is planning an ambitious and unique community gathering to generate a new vision for North Minneapolis. This event will be proceeded by and followed by additional community engagement work. This consultancy is expected to begin in October and will continue through June 2012.

The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) has grants available for community organizations. The MCWD deadline for the Cynthia Krieg Watershed Stewardship Fund is October 19.

Historic Riverfront 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, October 8
This 5K Run/Walk begins at 9 a.m. at Boom Island Park and takes you through historic Northeast Minneapolis, along the Mississippi River, and over the Stone Arch Bridge. Registration is $25 through October 4 or $30 on race day. All proceeds benefit St. Anthony West neighborhood projects.

Heritage Park Harvest Feast on Saturday, October 8
You’re invited to a community garden celebration with free refreshments featuring fresh home grown food right from the garden! This event will be held from 1 – 2:30 p.m. at the garden behind 718 Aldrich Ave. N.

A Night on 48th – Third Annual Wine, Dine and Date Night 48th & Chicago on Saturday, October 8

Corcoran Used Book Sale on Saturday, October 15
The books sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the CNO office, 3451 Cedar Ave. S., and will feature baked goods, raffle prizes, and books of all kinds priced from $0.50 to $2.50.

Cedar Riverside Walking Tour on Saturday, October 15
Join CPED and 2nd Ward staff at 10:30 a.m. for a walking tour on 6th St., 15th Ave., and 4th St. to note what works and what doesn’t work for pedestrians and other road users.

Facing Race - New Conversations for Race and Racism on Saturday, October 22
The Longfellow Community Council is proud to partner with the Saint Paul Foundation to offer Facing Race, a series of participatory, discussion-based, events that offer residents the opportunity to learn about race and racism and the impact it has on our community. Facing Race events are free and open to everyone but you must register. This first conversation will be held from 1 – 4:30 p.m. at Becketwood Senior Cooperative 4300 W. River Parkway.

Hennepin Lake Liquors Community Wine Tasting on Wednesday, October 26

Venture North Bike Walk & Coffee Grand Opening on Saturday, October 8
Celebrate the grand opening of the new Venture North Bike Walk Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Redeemer Center for Life, 1830 Glenwood Ave. N. Learn what biking and walking resources are available at North Minneapolis’ new community bike shop and enjoy food and live entertainment.
Benefit concert for Pioneers and Soldiers Cemetery on Saturday, October 8
2925 Cedar Ave. S. Proceeds will help support efforts to restore the historic steel and limestone pillar fence that borders the cemetery along Lake St. and Cedar Ave.

Authentic East Hennepin Experience on Wednesday, October 12
East Hennepin Avenue, originally known as Bay Street, has always been a ferociously interesting dividing line between northeast and southeast Minneapolis. Meet at East Hennepin and Main St. at 5 p.m. for 45 minutes to learn a very brief history of St. Anthony Falls, glimpse the interior of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and hear gripping tales of the neighborhood’s first families.

Te Karen Organization of Minnesota (KOM) invites you to the 1st Annual KOM Gala from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. at Hamline University’s Klas Center.

American Indian OIC Fall Culture Day on Friday, October 14
Come spend a day and learn about the heritage of America’s First Nations! There will be four sessions on Native languages, modern Native history, the Native drum and drum group and the Native dancing and Regalia. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Indian OIC, 1845 East Franklin Ave.

Native Pride Dancers on Friday, October 14 and Saturday, October 15
Rainbow-colored headdresses, pulsating drumming, and fancy footwork are part of the excitement of a Native American powwow. World champion Fancy Dancer Larry Yazzie (Meskwaki) and the Native Pride Dancers perform flamboyant movements passed down by their ancestors and sacred songs from the Northern Plains. This performance will be held at the Cowles Center, 528 Hennepin Ave.

Nordeast Big River Brew Fest on Saturday, October 15
Northeast Minneapolis has an incredible history - and beer is deeply rooted in that history! Serving the Northeast community for 96 years, East Side Neighborhood Services is also part of this history. Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. All proceeds raised at the Nordeast Brew Fest will go directly toward programs benefiting low-income children, youth, families, and seniors. This event runs from 1 – 4 p.m. at the Grain Belt Bottling House, 79 13th Ave. NE.

Run to Unite on Sunday, October 16
Somali Minnesotans and Minnesotans at-large are invited to run /or walk 5 kilometers to collectively learn from each other and make a positive impact in Somalia, which is currently the worst humanitarian crisis in the world and in a state of a famine. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. at East River Flats.

Minneapolis Parks Foundation Fundraiser on Monday, October 17
Join the Minneapolis Parks Foundation from 6 – 9 p.m. at the most authentic farm-to-table restaurant in town—Wise Acre Eatery, 5401 Nicollet Ave. S. This event is a fundraiser to help replace trees swept away in North Minneapolis and to support the next generation of parks.
It's Time to Talk: Forums on Race on Tuesday, October 18
Join the YWCA of Minneapolis for the Ninth Annual It's Time to Talk: Forums on Race. Engage in a powerful experience with over 1,000 people who are committed to improving race relations in our community. This event will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Cooking Safely for a Crowd: Video Conference Training on Tuesday, October 18
This training is for anyone who plans, prepares or serves food at large group events should attend. This includes cooks and servers at church and community events that occur every week or once a year. This workshop will satisfy the requirement for a trained volunteer as amended during the 2011 legislative session. The training is offered from 1 – 4 p.m. in multiple locations (two in St. Paul) and is sponsored by the U of M Extension Service and the Minnesota Department of Health.

Great River Outing: To the Banks, Broadway and Back on Wednesday, October 19
Join MRP and Hawthorne Community Leaders from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. and explore pedestrian and bike routes from Farview Park (meet at the park's southeast corner on 26th Ave. and 4th St.) to the Mississippi, down to Broadway Pizza and back. Along the way there will be a discussion of current and future initiatives to strengthen the connection to the Mississippi.
The Great Northeast Pumpkin Grab on Friday, October 21
Get your Halloween spirit started with a neighborhood pumpkin sale featuring prizes and giveaways. This event will be held from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Bulldog NE, 401 E. Hennepin Ave.

Peace, Power and Unity Conference on Saturday, October 22
Attend the 6th annual Peace, Power and Unity Conference at the First Universalist Church, 3400 Dupont Ave. S. This one-day conference will connect community leaders from across the metropolitan area by providing educational workshops on addressing important community issues and concentrate community engagement resources in a new way. There is no cost to attend the event, which will include lunch, daycare services, and interpreting in Spanish and Somali.

Threads for Somalia on Saturday, October 29
Ka Joog presents Threads for Somalia, an event featuring a fashion show and live performance with proceeds supporting relief efforts from the famine in Somalia in partnership with nonprofit organization Save the Children. “I’m in the Doghouse” Community Celebration on Saturday, October 22
Come to the Animal Shelter for “I’m in the Dog House”. MACC will be “kenneling” and then “adopting” prominent Twin City celebrities and media personalities to raise awareness and much-needed funding for the 4,000 animals cared for this year. There will be plenty of family-fun for everyone – tours of the shelter, face-painting, agility demonstrations and educational booths in our parking lot. This event will be held from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 212 17th Ave. N.

Community Participation Program – new draft guidelines, information sessions
NCR is pleased to provide for review and comment a first draft of the revised Community Participation Program Guidelines. The draft guidelines outline how Community Participation Program funding will be provided to neighborhood organizations in Minneapolis to assist with community engagement and to act on neighborhood priorities. The approved Guidelines will go into effect starting July, 2012.
Written comments on this draft will be accepted until Monday, November 21, 2011. You may email your comments to ncr@minneapolismn.gov (email preferred) or send them to:
