Homegrown Minneapolis Food Council – Application review begins after Friday, October 21

Homegrown Minneapolis Food Council (HMFC) is a citywide initiative expanding our community’s ability to grow, process, distribute, eat and compost more healthy, sustainable, locally grown foods. The HMFC is striving for diverse and balanced representation.

City Board and Commissions – Applications still being accepted

Applications are still being accepted for openings on a number of open boards and commissions that the City Council and Mayor will appoint this fall.  The City is seeking applicants with a diversity of backgrounds and experiences to strengthen the work of the City.

Call for Workshop Proposals – November 14 deadline

You’re invited to present your best at this 1st annual Neighborhood & Community Connections Conference – Better Communities through Neighborhoods!  The February 11, 2012 conference is designed to showcase and build successful community collaborations between neighborhoods, cultural communities, residents, and the City. A major theme of the conference is to build diversity and capacity in neighborhood organizations and communities by providing new and innovative ideas through collaboration and participation.  Don’t miss this opportunity to share your experiences and network with other neighborhood-minded activists from throughout our city.

Is the tornado still causing you stress or anxiety? There’s help

The Recovery from the tornado can be very challenging for many people, and the response or reaction can vary from individual to individual. But whatever your situation, there is help available. For assistance and referral, call the Tornado Recovery Hotline at 612-787-3730. Families can call NorthPoint Behavioral Health at 612-543-2566 to get information about NorthPoint services or for an appointment.

Repairs complete on tornado-damaged sidewalks on the North Side

Crews have completed repairs to sidewalks damaged by the May 22 tornado in north Minneapolis. Around 1,600 sidewalk panels and 600 feet of curb were damaged when the tornado cut through north Minneapolis.

Facing Race - New Conversations for Race and Racism on Saturday, October 22

The Longfellow Community Council is proud to partner with the Saint Paul Foundation to offer Facing Race, a series of participatory, discussion-based, events that offer residents the opportunity to learn about race and racism and the impact it has on our community. Facing Race events are free and open to everyone but you must register. This first conversation will be held from 1 – 4:30 p.m. at Becketwood Senior Cooperative, 4300 W. River Parkway.

Hennepin Lake Liquors Community Wine Tasting on Wednesday, October 26

Join Uptown neighbors from 6 – 9 p.m. at Whittier Alliance.

Bryn Mawr Harvest Dinner on Wednesday, October 26

The annual Harvest Dinner will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. in the Bryn Mawr Elementary School Cafeteria. Participate in the soup/stew or salad competition, or just bring another dish to share.

Powderhorn Empty Bowls on Friday, November 4

Come to the Powderhorn Park Building, select a handmade bowl donated by a local potter, have a meal of soup and bread, and make a donation. The net income from the event is donated to help feed the hungry in the neighborhood.

Great River Outing: Old Highland to Old Man River on Saturday, November 5

Join the Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership and the North Commons at 1:30 p.m. Bring questions and your walking shoes!

Whittier Green Fair on Saturday, November 12

Learn some easy steps to living a more sustainable and environmentally conscious life.

Great River Outing: Connecting the River Parks on Sunday, November 13

Join the Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership and Marshall Terrace Park at 1:30 p.m.

The Great Northeast Pumpkin Grab on Friday, October 21

Get your Halloween spirit started with a neighborhood pumpkin sale featuring prizes and giveaways. This event will be held from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Bulldog NE, 401 E. Hennepin Ave.

Peace, Power and Unity Conference on Saturday, October 22

Attend the 6th annual Peace, Power and Unity Conference at the First Universalist Church, 3400 Dupont Ave. S. This one-day conference will connect community leaders from across the metropolitan area by providing educational workshops on addressing important community issues and concentrate community engagement resources in a new way. There is no cost to attend the event, which will include lunch, daycare services, and interpreting in Spanish and Somali.

Home Improvement and Expo and Healthy Life Expo on Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23

See 200 exhibits featuring the latest home improvement products and services or visit booths offering everything for health, balance and success in all areas of life. Both expos run from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Admission is $6 or free with a food shelf donation.

Free screening of the movie Fresh on Monday, October 24

Northside Fresh, a coalition of seventy-nine community-based organizations and individuals committed to the North Minneapolis food environment and promoting economic development opportunities for North Minneapolis residents, invite you to a free screening of the movie Capri Theater. This event begins at 5:30 p.m.

An Evening in Honor of State Senator Linda Berlin on Tuesday, October 25

Join residents for an evening with former State Senator Linda Berglin, who served in the Minnesota House and Senate for a total of 39 years. Former Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton emcees. This event will be held at from 6:30 -8:30 p.m. at Sabathani Community Center.

Ending Homelessness Together Luncheon on Wednesday, October 26

Attend Plymouth Church Neighborhood Foundation’s annual luncheon to fund efforts to end homelessness. This even will be held at 12 p.m. at the Downtown Hilton.

Lives Worth Living premiers on PBS on Thursday, October 27

While there are close to 50 million Americans living with disabilities, Lives Worth Living is the first television history of their decades-long struggle for equal rights.

Threads for Somalia on Saturday, October 29

Ka Joog presents Threads for Somalia, an event featuring a fashion show and live performance with proceeds supporting relief efforts from the famine in Somalia in partnership with nonprofit organization Save the Children. This event will be held at 8 p.m. at the Cedar Cultural Center, 416 Cedar Ave. S.

Gathering for our Children and Returning Adoptees Pow Wow on Saturday, November 5

The Wablencia Song will be sung for those returning adoptees and fostered individuals and their families. There will be a ceremony offered to heal the grief cause by separation from family and heritage. The Pow Wow will be held at the Minneapolis American Indian Center, 1530 East Franklin Ave.

La Conexion de las Americas Annual Gala on Saturday, November 5

Celebrate 28 years of service to the community and the hemisphere, with around 250 friends, Latin American buffet style dinner, drinks and dancing, silent auction, and multiple performance artists. This event will be begin at 7 p.m. at the Ukranian Event Center, 301 Main St. NE.

CityCamp Minnesota on Saturday, November 12

CityCamp Minnesota launches its first unconference at the U of M’s Humphrey Center with the broad theme of “Community 2.0.” From great people in government, community organizations, and technology start-ups to “everyday citizens” who happen to be software developers, social media experts, open government advocates, and students, everyone is welcome.

Twin Cities Media Alliance Fall Forum on Saturday, November 12

Attend the Twin Cities Media Alliance Fall Forum 2011 at the Minneapolis Central Library. The focus will be “Media Tools for the New Normal”.

Running Wolf Fitness Center

Running Wolf Fitness Center is now open in the Phillips Community Center, 2323 11th Ave. S. There are no membership fees through March 30th with a fitness exam.

Take the Making It Better Challenge this October

Making it Better seeks to bring people together to discover, celebrate and share stories of Minneapolis residents who are working to make their communities healthier by increasing access to healthy foods and physical activity opportunities. The campaign focuses on three primary areas where healthy changes are taking place – neighborhoods, schools and the workplace.

Family History Fair on Saturday, October 22

Celebrate Family History Month at the Family History Fair. Browse more than a dozen ethnic and special interest tables, connect with genealogy experts, learn how to start your family history and discover exceptional family history resources at the Minneapolis Central Library. This event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Who is My Neighbor? Understanding East African Cultures on Saturday, October 22

Learn about the people, culture, language and religion of Ethiopia and Somalia from Hennepin County Library’s Outreach Liaison Abdirahman Muktar and Librarian Guthema Roba. This event begins at 10 a.m. at the East Lake Library.

“I’m in the Doghouse” Community Celebration on Saturday, October 22

Come to the Animal Shelter for “I’m in the Dog House”. Minneapolis Animal Care and Control will be “kenneling” and then “adopting” prominent Twin City celebrities and media personalities to raise awareness and much-needed funding for the 4,000 animals cared for this year. There will be plenty of family-fun for everyone – tours of the shelter, face-painting, agility demonstrations and educational booths in our parking lot. This event will be held from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 212 17th Ave. N.

Public Hearing on Adding Bicycles in the Traffic Definition on Monday, October 24

Attend, express your opinions, and/or submit such in writing.

Fall Street Sweeping begins on Tuesday, October 25

Each spring and fall, Public Works crews sweep every mile of the City's more than 1,100 miles of streets – curb to curb – to help keep our neighborhoods clean and livable and to protect our waterways. Use the Street Sweeping Schedule Lookup to find out which week your street is scheduled to be swept.

Hennepin Green Partners Forum on Tuesday, October 25

Work to improve the educational materials, resources and programs that empower residents to be stewards of the environment. This forum will held from 9 – 11 a.m. at UROC.

Great Streets Facade Improvement RFP Issued – Proposals due Thursday, October 27

The Department of Community Planning and Economic Development (CPED) is seeking applications from organizations interested in administering the Great Streets Façade Improvement Matching Grant Program in eligible neighborhood business districts.

Free Testing of Children's Toys for Lead on Thursday, October 27, Friday, October 28, and Saturday, November 19

Using Data to Manage Neighborhood Change on Friday, October 28

Learn about regional partnership efforts that use how to use data to manage neighborhood change and target scarce resources. This daylong event will be held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.

Theodore Wirth Park Community Design Event on Wednesday, November 2 – Saturday, November 5

Work with the Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC), community and a professional design team to create and review concept options for the park as a whole.

Help Shape Priorities for Minneapolis Businesses and Business Districts on Tuesday, November 8

This meeting will be held from 8:30 – 10 a.m. at CPED, 105 5th Ave S.

Great River Outing: Inside the Grain Belt Complex on Wednesday, November 9

Join the Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership, RSP Architects, and the City of Minneapolis for a Great River Outing tour of the Grain Belt Brew House and the Office Building. Meet at 5:30 at register.

Project Homeless Connect – volunteers needed for December 12

Assist Project Homeless Connect, a one-stop shop to help our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness connect with services they need. Volunteer training will be held in November and December. Sign up now!

East Downtown Council seeks Executive Assistant to the Board

Metro Deaf School seeks Interim Athletic Director/Extra Curricular Activities Director

Metro Deaf School provides a bilingual and interdisciplinary curriculum for deaf and hard-of-hearing Pre-K - 12 students who communicate and learn using American Sign Language (ASL) and English. The School is currently seeking an Interim Athletic Director/Extra Curricular Activities Director. Others positions are also available.

Community Participation Program – new draft guidelines, information sessions

NCR is pleased to provide for review and comment a first draft of the revised Community Participation Program Guidelines. The draft guidelines outline how Community Participation Program funding will be provided to neighborhood organizations in Minneapolis to assist with community engagement and to act on neighborhood priorities. The approved Guidelines will go into effect starting July, 2012.

Written comments on this draft will be accepted until Monday, November 21, 2011. You may email your comments to ncr@minneapolismn.gov (email preferred) or send them to:
