Neighborhood and Community Connections Conference – registration begins January 9
The Neighborhood and Community Relations Department invites you to attend this first annual conference on Saturday, February 11, 2012 at the Zurah Shrine Event Center, 2540 Park Ave. S. The focus of the conference will be building equity, diversity and capacity of neighborhood and community-based organizations, and supporting new and innovative ideas for collaboration, cooperation and participation. Don’t miss this opportunity to share your experiences and network with neighborhood-minded activists from throughout our city. NCR has received a number of great workshop proposals. Proposal submitters will be notified in the coming weeks of the outcomes of our review process. Challenges of Black Genealogy on Saturday, December 3
Master storyteller and librarian, Jerry Blue, will share the experience of tracing his family history. He also will demonstrate resources to help you dig up your own black roots. This event will be held from 2 – 3 p.m. at Sumner Library, 611 Van White Mem. Blvd.

Homewood Gallery Studios has begun a series of One Read discussions in north Minneapolis. Future One Read discussions are scheduled for Saturday, December 10th and Saturday, January 7th from 2 - 3:30pm at the Homewood Gallery Studio, 2400 Plymouth Ave. N. The series is in conjunction with the “Talkabout” Book Club that meets regularly at the Homewood Gallery and was organized by Neighborhood and Community Relations staff member Billie Imhoede.

Is the tornado still causing you stress or anxiety? There’s help
The recovery from the tornado can be very challenging for many people, and the response or reaction can vary from individual to individual. But whatever your situation, there is help available. For assistance and referral, call the Tornado Recovery Hotline at 612-787-3730. Families can call NorthPoint Behavioral Health at 612-543-2566 to get information about NorthPoint services or for an appointment.

Neighborhood Partnership Initiative Grant – Convening on Thursday, December 1; application deadline Friday, December 15
The Neighborhood Partnership Initiative (NPI) program supports innovative and effective partnerships that utilize place based organizing to solve problems, and improve the community for everybody. Grants up to $10,000 will be awarded to successful applicants for a grant period of April through November 2012. Partnerships applying to NPI must include a resident driven organization serving a neighborhood area in Minneapolis or St. Paul and at least one of the following: a Minneapolis or St. Paul organization serving arts, youth, communities of color, disabled or immigrant constituencies. A convening will take place on Thursday, December 1 from 2 – 4:30 p.m. at the McKnight Foundation, 710 S. 2nd St., Suite 400. Attendees will hear from past frant recipeints and enjoy food and networking with fellow neighbrohood organizations staff and supporters.

North Loop’s Mix’n Mingle Party on Thursday, December 1

Citizens for a Loring Park Community (CLPC) Holiday Open House on Thursday, December 1
Come to a winter block party and and curry buffet supper. Meet neighbors, and stay as long as you want. This event will be held from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at 228 Clifton Ave.

Saturnalia Festival on Saturday, December 3
The Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Business Association invites you to the Saturnalia Festival, in downtown Bryn Mawr from 4 – 7 p.m. Saturnalia brightens the darkest time of the year and offers an alternative to events such as Hanukkah, Winter Solstice, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. Activities include musical performers, storytelling, a hayride tour of the neighborhood’s holiday lighting, masked reveling, and warm drinks and treats.

Neighborhood Candidate Forum for SD 59 State Senate seat on Monday, December 5
Learn more at a "Neighborhood Candidate Forum" for those seeking the SD 59 State Senate seat in the Minnesota Legislature being vacated mid-term by Larry Pogemiller. The forum will begin with a few neighborhood-related questions for all candidates present and then will be opened up to questions from the audience. This forum is sponsored by several neighborhood organziations, and will be held from 6:30 – 9 p.m. at Van Cleve Park, 901 15th Ave. SE.

Night Before New Years Eve Party on Friday, December 30
The Nokomis East Neighborhood Association (NENA) and the Nokomis Community Center/Minneapolis Parks and Recreation are proud to once again co-sponsor this annual community party from 5 – 8 p.m. at the Nokimis Community Center, 2401 E. Minnehaha Parkway. The entire event is free, but donations are appreciated. Families throughout the Twin Cities area and out-of-town guests are welcome.

Refugees & Immigrants: A Provider’s Perspective on Wednesday, November 30
This session is ideal for individuals who work with refugee or immigrant populations and have an interest in improving communications through better cultural understanding. Learn strategies to effectively serve new Minnesotans and gain insight into the unique challenges that refugee and immigrant groups face. MN Community Blueprint to Asian/American & Pacific Islander Health Equity: Today and Beyond on Wednesday, November 30

Catalyst Community Partners Coat Drive through Friday, December 9
Catalyst Community Partners needs your help in collecting new and gently used winter coats to benefit Northside Achievement Zone families. Last year over 200 coats were provided; the need is anticipated to be even greater this year. Drop off coats at 1200 West Broadway, Suite 180.

Northeast Calendar Release Party on Sunday, December 4
The Northeast CDC proudly celebrates the beauty of Northeast Minneapolis with a calendar for 2012! The calendar highlights local artwork and photography as well as information about and illustrations of the thirteen Northeast Neighborhoods. “Dakota 38” comes to Minneapolis on Sunday - Wednesday, December 4-7
Join the journey as we seek to build connections between our two distinct groups of people, who have both known struggle, for a joint experience of healing -- North Minneapolis and the Dakota Nation. Participate and partner in a showing of the documentary film “Dakota 38″, which captures a 330 mile horseback ride in December. The timing of this event is key as 2012 marks the 150 anniversary of the 1823 Emerson Ave. N.

Lead Safe Work Practices Training on Monday, December 5

Holiday Train on Sunday, December 11
Canadian Pacific Railway and the Northeast Minneapolis Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the 2011 Holiday Train event in Northeast Minneapolis in support of food shelves at 2800 Central Ave. NE. This is the CP Holiday Train’s only stop in Minneapolis this year.

Target Holidazzle Parade – Thursdays through Sundays through December 18
Bundle up the kids, pick up the grandparents and head to Holidazzle. Every year since 1992, when the first parade marched down Nicollet Mall, over 300,000 spectators converge on downtown Minneapolis to join the sparkling fun. The parade begins at 6:30 p.m., and runs along Nicollet from 12th St. to 4th St. This event is produce by the Minneapolis Downtown Council.

Friends of the Library Booksales on Thursday - Tuesday, December 1-6
Make you way to the North Regional Libraries for a week of book sales. Hours vary by location. Each year, book sales raise more than $250,000 and help distribute hundreds of thousands of affordable books back into community. Most books are priced at $2 or less.

Public hearings on proposed 2012 City budget on Wednesday, November 30 and Wednesday, December 14
The City of Minneapolis is holding two public hearings to give folks a chance to share their thoughts on the proposed 2012 budget. The official hearing is the day of budget adoption on Wednesday Dec. 14, but city leaders have added another hearing in November to give the public an earlier opportunity to weigh in on next year’s budget. Both hearings begin at 6:05 p.m. in City Hall room 317, www.minneapolismn.gov/TV.
A Call to Action mini conference on Friday, December 2
The Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights in collaboration with community experts will look at the disparities in education, justice, employment, health, and for women and minority businesses in a mini-conference focusing on best practices solutions that will bring an end to the divide. The mini conference will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center from 8 a.m. - 1:30 p.m and will conclude with a call to action.

Great River Outing: Tour of Graco on Monday, December 5

MAC Noise Information Public Open House on Thursday, December 8
The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) will be hosting a noise information public open house for members of the community who are interested in learning about aircraft noise measurements and metrics, the MSP Noise Oversight Committee, historical aircraft arrival and departure data, and other MAC Noise Program functions. The open house will be held from 5:30 – 8 p.m. at the MAC General Offices, 6040 28th Ave. S.

Project Homeless Connect – volunteers needed for December 12
Project Homeless Connect is a one-stop shop model for delivering services to people experiencing homelessness. Twice each year, Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis’ Neighborhood and Community Relations department partner with service providers, businesses, citizens, and faith congregations to bring multiple resources to one central location where people can come to access the services they need. The next Project Homeless Connect will be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Homegrown Minneapolis Community Meeting on Monday, December 12
Minneapolis residents who are interested in healthy, locally grown foods have a chance to learn about Homegrown Minneapolis. The meeting will include a report on the first two phases of Homegrown Minneapolis, the announcement of the new Minneapolis Food Council members and a check-in on the priorities community members have around development of a more healthy, sustainable local food system. This meeting will be held from 5 – 7:30 at at the University Research and Outreach Center (UROC), 2001 Plymouth Ave. N.

Revised NRP Ordinance and NRP Policy Board Resolution hearing scheduled for December 8, 2011
The Neighborhood and Community Relations Department has introduced to the City Council draft revisions to the existing Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) ordinance. With the expiration of the NRP Policy Board’s Joint Powers Agreement, the revised NRP ordinance and a related resolution to re-establish the NRP Policy Board are vital to continuation of the NRP program in Minneapolis. We are also proposing to revise the resolution for the Neighborhood Community Engagement Commission (NCEC). The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. in in 317 City Hall, 350 S. 5th St.
NCEC Committee of the Whole (CoW) Meeting on Wednesday, December 14
Committee of the Whole (CoW) meetings of the NCEC are usually held on the second Wednesday of each month, from 5 – 6:30 p.m. The location of the December meeting will be posted soon.
NCEC Meeting on Tuesday, December 20
Regular meetings of the NCEC are usually held on the fourth Tuesday of each month, from 5 - 7 p.m. The December meeting will be held on the third Tuesday at the UROC, 2100 Plymouth Ave. N.
