6:05 PM: Vice President Larsen Calls the Meeting to Order and Requests a moment of silence for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing.

 

Commissioner Casey shares that Commissioner Khan will be absent due to the preliminary diagnosis of a medical condition and need for further analysis.

Committee reports and updates to the full commission:

Contract Compliance: Chair Cecilia Rodriguez-Melendez, meets 3rd Monday of month at 5:30 pm in City Hall prior to the Full Commission meeting: Assistant Director Michael McHugh provides a hand out and makes a power point presentation to the commission on City of Minneapolis contract compliance and construction projects.

Standards and Procedures: Chair Danielle Shelton Walczak, meets 3rd Monday of month at 5:00 pm in City Hall prior to the Full Commission meeting.  Next meeting is May 20, 2013; current primary activity is proposing and reviewing changes and edits to the ordinance.

Public Relations and Education: Co-Chairs, Bernadette Casey and Marla Khan, meets 3rd Monday of month at 5:30 pm in City Hall prior to the Full Commission meeting.  PR&E will create its own question for the MLK Essay Competition in 2013 in an effort to get it better integrated into Minneapolis School curriculums.

The MCCR Executive Committee meets immediately after the monthly meeting of the full commission; and is comprised of MCCR Officers and Committee Chairs: next meeting is May 20, 2013.

 

League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions: Patricia Nelson, District Director of the MLHRC; presentation of the State Winners of the MLK Essay Awards is scheduled for April 27, 2013, 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Roseville City Hall.  The League has a new website which can be found at www.LeagueofMNHumanRights.org

 

Assistant Director (AD) Toni Newborn, Complaint Investigations Division, distributes a handout of Chapter 141 and provides an overview of potential changes to Chapter 141 and 142A, and encourages commissioners to submit ideas and suggestions for revisions to the S&P committee.  A power point presentation of the Commissioner’s Update Brief (CUB) is given.  As of April 15, 2013, there were 105 case files pending resolution with the department and a total of 22 cases that have been submitted for the Department’s 2013 EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) contract.  There are 10 current cases under review by the Commission: 1 Probable Cause (PC), 5 No Probable Cause (NPC), and 4 Dismissals. 

 

Chairs report: Larsen indicates that two or three commissioners will be offered the opportunity to provide a brief check-in and update of their activities at each full commission meeting.

 

Public Comment: Commissioner Strauss announces the Dining Out for Life event.
