Note: Many projects require more than one permit. To determine which permits you need for your project, call Minneapolis 311 (if outside the Minneapolis city limits call (612) 673-3000).
An elevator permit is required for:
- New installations
- Removal from service
- Water damage
- Construction use
- Temporary use/Restricted use
- Is needed for related devices, such as escalators, dumbwaiters, chairlifts, etc.
Note: A licensed contractor must get the permit and perform the work.
After an elevator permit is issued, at least one inspection is required before the work can be approved.
Permits for elevator work are issued to elevator contractors who hold a valid elevator contractor’s license issued by the Minnesota Department of Labor & Industry.
Permit, licensing, and inspection requirements shall be according to Minnesota State Statute 16B, State Electrical Code 1315, and Minnesota Rules Chapter 3800.
To find out if an elevator contractor is licensed by the State, go to Find a licensed contractor
The contractor must provide proof of licensure at the time they apply for a permit.
The City of Minneapolis is now performing annual inspections of Elevators and Related Devices, per State of MN requirements. For more information go to the City of Minneapolis Elevator Annual Inspections web page.
