Mayor Betsy Hodges Hires Policy Aide for Economic Development
Erick Garcia Luna joins staff to help drive inclusive growth
April 28, 2014 (MINNEAPOLIS) — A policy aide focused on economic development and opportunity today joined Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges’ staff. Mayor Hodges first announced the hire of Erick Garcia Luna last Thursday in her 2014 State of the City address.
“To realize the promise of growth, we as a city have to do everything we can to make sure we are fostering investment,” Mayor Hodges said. “I am thrilled that Erick Garcia Luna is joining our staff, a team I am confident will help us move the dial on running the city well, growth and equity. Garcia Luna’s professional, personal and academic background make him uniquely qualified to focus on economic development, ensuring our growth is inclusive.”
Garcia Luna spent the past four-and-a-half years working for U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, serving in a variety of capacities. Most recently he worked as her Outreach Director, covering Immigration, Education, Housing, and Children and Teenage issues, building relationships with constituents across Minnesota. Prior to joining Senator Klobuchar’s team, he worked on Economic Development focused on the revitalization efforts of the Central Avenue commercial corridor in Northeast Minneapolis. Garcia Luna also Chaired the DFL Latino Caucus from 2008-2010 and served on the Latino Advisory Committee for the City of Minneapolis in 2009. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Minnesota; he also completed coursework in Political Economy and Political Science from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Mexico City. Garcia Luna is a Mexican immigrant and became a U.S. Citizen in 2008.
