Mayor Rybak: Governor's Right-Sized Bonding Proposal Will Create Good Jobs
Nicollet Mall rebuild will create hundreds of construction jobs and help create thousands more on Minnesota's Main Street
January 17, 2012 (MINNEAPOLIS)--Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak today praised Governor Mark Dayton's bonding proposal that will create more than 21,000 desperately-needed jobs in the building and construction trades and will lay the groundwork for thousands more.
"Governor Dayton's jobs plan is right-sized and urgently needed," Mayor Rybak said. "Government has a role to play in creating jobs, and building badly-needed public infrastructure is one right way to do it.
First, because it puts people in the building and construction trades, where unemployment is at crisis levels, to work immediately on shovel-ready projects. Second, because it builds the common ground that helps everyone succeed. Governor Dayton’s jobs plan does both."
Governor Dayton's jobs plan proposes $25 million to rebuild Nicollet Mall. Mayor Rybak continued:
"Nicollet Mall fuels Minnesota's economy: 165,000 people from across our state travel every day to work for the hundreds of employers, including some of Minnesota's largest companies, that make their home in the 34 million square feet of office space that line it. Rebuilding Nicollet Mall is a win all around: it will put hundreds of people to work immediately in good jobs, and it will help employers on Nicollet Mall create, recruit for and retain thousands more on Minnesota's Main Street."
Mayor Rybak concluded: "I thank Governor Dayton for his support and look forward to working with legislators of both parties to help pass this important and much-needed jobs plan."
