What type of computer setup/browser is needed to apply online?
A computer or tablet with Internet access and a compatible Web browser is needed. The preferred Web browsers are the most up-to-date version of one of the following:  Internet Explorer 11, Chrome 47, or Edge 20.

What positions is the City hiring for?
All positions currently open for application will be listed on the City of Minneapolis Jobs webpage.  Jobs that are open to all applicants (internal and external) will be located in the “Current Job Openings” area. Jobs that are open only to current City employees will be located in the “Internal Job Openings” area.

What if I am interested in a job that isn't open for application?
If a position is not currently open for application, complete a Job Interest Card for notification of specific jobs or job categories. When a position with that title or category is posted for application within 12 months, a notification will be sent to the email address provided in the Job Interest Card.

Can I apply with a paper application?
No, the City of Minneapolis only accepts applications online.

Who is considered a current City employee?
Only current employees of the City of Minneapolis under the jurisdiction of the City Council may apply for internal-only job openings. NOT included in the definition of a City employee are interns and employees of other City boards and agencies, such as the Minneapolis Park Board, Minneapolis School Board, Library, Minneapolis Building Commission, Youth Coordinating Board and Public Housing Authority.

Do I use HRIS Self-Service to apply if I am a current City employee?
No, all job openings are now posted and processed through Team Minneapolis, the City’s new online application system. To apply for an internal-only job opening, click Internal Job Openings.

Is my application information from the old online application system still available?
No. Applicant information and previously submitted applications in the former online application system (HRIS) will not transfer over to the new online application system (Team Minneapolis). After your first application is submitted in Team Minneapolis, your application information will be available to update for future applications.

How do I get an account with NEOGOV?
Click on a job title, then click “Apply.” Click “Create an Account.” Enter a valid email address. Create a username (do not use spaces or special characters) and a password (eight characters, upper- and lower-case letters with at least one number and one special character). Re-type your password again and answer the math question. Your account is now set up.

If I already have a NEOGOV account, can I use that for the City?
Yes. After logging in, your previously-entered application information will be available to edit. If the City of Minneapolis requires any additional information that was not entered previously, there is an opportunity to provide that information before submitting the application.

How do I “unlock” my account if I forgot my password?
An applicant’s account is locked after three failed password attempts. A locked account will be reactivated within 30 minutes, or it can be unlocked before 30 minutes by resetting your password using the “Forgot Password” link.

Can more than one person use the login?
No, the login is assigned to one person and should not be shared.

How do I apply for a job?
The City of Minneapolis accepts online applications only, and only for positions that are open for application. Click the job title of the position, and then click the “Apply” link.

To setup an account with NEOGOV, click the “Create an Account” link and follow the instructions. Begin the application process one of two ways:

1. Upload a current resume. The system will populate the application fields with data from your resume and provide you an opportunity to add or edit that information.
2. Skip uploading a current resume, and type in information throughout the application.

NEOGOV users may simply sign in to their NEOGOV account. Any previously entered information will be available to edit, and opportunities are provided to complete information unique to the City of Minneapolis.

In all circumstances, fully complete the online application. Partial and incomplete applications will not be considered. Attaching a resume is not a substitute for completing all sections of the online application.

For a full tutorial on completing the online application and other helpful tips, refer to the City’s application guide.

How do I get an email address?
Free email accounts are available through a number of providers. The City of Minneapolis does not endorse any particular provider, but examples of free providers include: Microsoft Hotmail, Yahoo, Google, Excite and AOL.

What if I share an email address with another person?
The system only allows an email address to be associated with one NEOGOV account. A new email account will need to be set up.

Can I apply without having a resume?
The job posting will indicate if a resume is required. If it is not indicated, applicants may still upload a resume.

If I have a resume, can I just submit that?
No. Even if a resume is required, all applicants must complete the relevant sections of the online application: personal information, work history, education, agency-wide questions and supplemental questions.

If an online application is left blank and only includes a resume, the application will be deemed incomplete and will not be considered further.

Complete and return the Veterans’ Preference Form along with a DD-214 and all other applicable veteran documentation for eligibility review. Veteran information must be received by Human Resources no later than the application deadline for the position you are applying for in order to be considered.

How long does the online application process take to complete?
It depends on how much information you need to input. It can take as little as 15 minutes. On average, allow approximately 30-45 minutes to complete an application. Your application can be saved as a work in progress and finished at a later time.

The online application has a 30-minute time out limit, so be sure to save the information you have entered frequently or it may be lost. Click the Submit button at the end of the application for it to be received by Human Resources.

Can I save my application without submitting it?
Yes, the application can be saved as a work in progress.

I cannot find my degree listed in the Education section.
The type of degree available to select is limited by the type of school selected in the first field of the Education section. When “high school” is chosen, only “degrees” associated with high school are available to select. When “college” is chosen, only undergraduate degrees are available to select.  When “graduate school” is chosen, only graduate degrees are available to select.

I lost all of my information while completing an application. What happened?
You may have used the Back button located on your toolbar, which when used within the application may remove all data. Or your session may have timed out if you were logged in without activity for longer than 30 minutes. To avoid losing your information, save your information periodically and avoid the use of the toolbar Back button.

When is the application deadline?
All application materials must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on the posted close date, which includes any required document attachments. Once a position closes, it will be removed from the Web page and applications will not be accepted.

I missed the application deadline, can I still apply?
No. Any application received after 11:59 p.m. on the posted close date will not be considered.

How do I know if my application was received?
You will receive a message “Application Submitted Successfully” within the online application when you have submitted your application. In addition, you will receive an email confirmation to the email address provided in the application.

To verify the positions you have submitted applications for, log in to your NEOGOV account and click on “Application Status” under your username.

Who do I call if I’m having technical problems applying?
If you are having issues with your login or have forgotten your password, use the ‘Reset Password’ link that is directly below the username/password login box. The system will generate an email containing a link to reset your password. Please be sure to check your spam/junk mail folders and also add info@governmentjobs.com and info@neogov.com to your ‘safe sender’ list. The link within the email expires after 72 hours.  If you still do not receive the email notice, contact NEOGOV Customer Support at 1-855-524-5627 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. CST, Monday-Friday.

Do I have to submit a separate application for each position I want to apply for?
Yes. However, once an account is created, applying for positions is quick and easy. The system utilizes your saved applications as the basis for each posting in which you are interested. Position-specific supplemental questions may need to be answered. Review and update your application as necessary.

Can I edit an application that I already submitted?
No, once an application is submitted, it cannot be added to, deleted or changed.

What if I forgot to add an attachment?
An attachment cannot be added once an application has been submitted.

How can I change my personal information?
Log in to your NEOGOV account and click on Account Settings. Click on the Edit pen to update your name, address, phone number, and email address.

How can I find out the status of my application?
Log in to your NEOGOV account and click “Application Status” under your username. You will see a list of submitted applications and the status of each.

How will you contact me about a position I applied for?
All communications to applicants will be via the email address provided in the application. Be sure to check your email frequently.

What are the steps in the hiring process?
It depends on the position applied for. For an overview of the hiring process at the City, see “Hiring Process”. Generally, the hiring process includes a review and rating of applications, one or more selection tests/exams, placement on an eligible list, referral to the hiring manager, possibly a job interview, and pre-employment checks such as background and/or a drug test.

Throughout the hiring process, Human Resources will update your application status. Check the application status by logging into your NEOGOV account and clicking “Application Status”.

What if I am not chosen for a position?
The City of Minneapolis’ objective is to hire the best person for each job, and vacancies are very competitive. Numerous qualified candidates will apply for the same position. When your name is placed on an eligible list, you will continue to be considered for an interview for the length of that eligible list. If you are not successful in getting one job, we encourage you to continue to check our job openings for other jobs that you are qualified for.
