Merger of the Local and National Warehouse Historic Districts

In 1978 the North Loop Warehouse Historic District was locally designated by the Minneapolis City Council. Then in 1989 the Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The NRHP Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District is substantially larger in size than the locally designated North Loop Warehouse District; this difference in size is attributed to a larger scope of significance for the NRHP district.

Locally designated districts receive greater protection from demolition and inappropriate changes than National Register Designations. The North Loop Warehouse Historic District has benefited from regulation and design review not afforded to NRHP Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District.

On January 13, 2009 the Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) nominated the NRHP Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District and directed staff to commence a designation study of the district.

On December 4, 2009 the Minneapolis City Council adopted a resolution designating the Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District as a Historic District.

Designation Study

A designation study outlines the historic context and significance of the district and evaluates the ability of its resources to convey the significance of the district.

Past Community Meetings on Design Guidelines

CPED staff hosted three public meetings to gain community input on the development of design guidelines for the Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District. Summaries of the meetings, a copy of the presentation from those meetings and other materials associated with those meeting are located below.

Community Meeting #1
On May 14, 2009 the Community Planning and Economic Development Department held a public meeting from 6:30 to 8:30 in City Hall regarding the Local Designation of the National Register of Historic Places Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District. The purpose of this meeting was to review the history of the area, why the area is significant to Minneapolis's Heritage, and discuss the character of the district.

May 14 th Presentation

To facilitate the discussion on the character of the district, staff prepared three questions. CPED prepared an online survey with these same three questions to allow for increased community participation. The survey closed on May 31, 2009.

The purpose of this survey was to gather community input on the visual character of the Minneapolis Warehouse Historic District. This input will be used to develop Design Guidelines for the Warehouse Historic District

The survey results are below. These are a summary of the community responses and in some cases direct quotes from respondents.

Character Survey Results

Community Meeting #2
On June 9, 2009 CPED held a public meeting from 6 to 8pm in the Heritage Landing Community Room. During this meeting the results of character survey were reviewed and draft guiding principles for the design guidelines were discussed. This was followed by a discussion of compatible design. The presentation from this meeting can be found at the link below.
