Computer Tutor

Purpose

Assist senior center participants in using Internet-connected computers at center. Help seniors surf the Internet, send e-mail and work on personal projects.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in orientation session.
  • Become familiar with capabilities of computers at the UCare Skyway Senior Center.
  • Help seniors use the computers for sending and receiving e-mail or to browse the Internet.
  • Assist seniors who want to use standard Microsoft software for personal projects. Users will bring their own discs or CDs to save their work.
  • Limit users to 30-minute appointments on the computers.

Qualifications

Must have a friendly manner, good communication skills and be sensitive to the needs of older adults. Must be patient and have ability to explain how to use the center computers and software. Must have prior computer experience and know how to use the Internet, how to send e-mail messages and how to use a standard Microsoft office software package.

Time Commitment

Hours are flexible. Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Supervision

Reports to Skyway Senior Center director.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) benefits: up to $20 per month in travel expenses reimbursed and invitation to volunteer recognition events. Validated parking provided to volunteers who work a minimum of three (3) hours per week.

Host

Purpose

To welcome participants to the center, help them choose self-directed drop-in activities, make coffee and set out refreshments.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in orientation session.
  • Greet visitors.
  • Make coffee, set out coffee supplies and refreshments. Notify director when supplies are low.
  • Clean tables and keep kitchen area tidy.
  • Help participants find games, puzzles, cards, daily newspaper and magazines.
  • Help participants record daily attendance and program participation in daily log.
  • Provide information to the public about programs and services. Consult with staff for answers and get back to clients with information.

Qualifications

Must have a friendly and efficient manner, good people skills, and be sensitive to the needs of older adults. Prior food service experience helpful but not necessary.

Time Commitment

Must be available 2-4 hours, one day a week. Must arrange coverage with other host volunteers when you are unable to work your scheduled shift.

Receptionist

Purpose

To greet visitors, answer phones, transfer calls to staff, make phone calls, help participants register for programs and classes, keep daily attendance log, provide information about programs and services, other clerical work.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in orientation session.
  • Greet visitors.
  • Answer phones, take messages and transfer calls to staff
  • Make reminder phone calls to participants.
  • Help participants register for classes and programs by phone or in person. Take payment for classes. Keep accurate records of all registrations.
  • Record daily attendance in daily log and program participation on roster.
  • Provide information to the public about programs and services. Consult with staff for answers and get back to clients with information.
  • Assist with simple clerical tasks as needed. Tasks to include: mailings, collating, photo copying, making phone calls, etc.

Qualifications

Must have a friendly and efficient manner. Possesses good phone and communication skills, and excellent organizational skills. Pays attention to detail and is sensitive to the needs of older adults. Prior office experience helpful but not necessary.

Time Commitment
