Menthol Tobacco

The Minneapolis Health Department is supporting community and youth-driven ideas to prevent tobacco use, specifically youth initiation. Menthol is a flavoring that masks the harshness of tobacco and also makes it harder to quit.

Project Description

The Health Department is partnering with three youth groups to raise awareness on how menthol impacts their community. This page will be updated as the project progresses.

The Health Department is also supporting an effort led by the African American Leadership Forum to develop community-driven strategies to reduce menthol tobacco use in the African American community. Approximately 80% of African American smokers use menthol tobacco.

The tobacco industry has mainly targeted the African American community along with other communities to advertise mentholated products.

The Health Department also recently partnered with Indigenous People’s Task Force’s youth in exploring tobacco use in their community. The youth group will continue to share their concerns in the community and support compliance of local tobacco ordinances.
