Minneapolis Empowerment Zone seeks proposals for education and safety programs

October 18, 2004 (MINNEAPOLIS) The Minneapolis Empowerment Zone (EZ) Governance board is issuing Request for Proposals (RFP) for programs that will increase academic achievement of young people living in the EZ; and programs that increase the safety of residents and business in the EZ.

The Minneapolis Empowerment Zone is holding informational meetings for those interested in submitting proposals. The meetings will be held:

Education RFP

2 – 3 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004

Crown Roller Mill building, 105 Fifth Ave. S., Suite 200, Minneapolis

Safety RFP

2 – 3 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2004

$1 million is available for programs that enhance educational opportunities for students in grades Kindergarten through twelve that live in the EZ. Preference will be given to programs that: support closing the academic achievement gap; assist English language learners; and provide academic enrichment for students performing below grade level.

$500,000 is available for programs that empower residents and businesses in the EZ to participate in solutions that create a safer community. Proposals must be for community-based programs that complement or enhance the efforts of community members, business owners, the Minneapolis Police Department, Hennepin County and other key stakeholders.
