TheCorridor Housing Initiative, part of theCity of Minneapolis Corridor Housing Strategy, won the 2005 Outstanding Planning Special Community Initiative Award from the Minnesota Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA).
The award recognizes successful use of the planning process in nontraditional settings, with an emphasis on projects that expand public understanding of the planning process.
Minneapolis’ Corridor Housing Strategy aims to increase affordable housing along transit corridors—Minneapolis’ "Main Streets"—by acquiring critical sites, awarding priority funding to development tied to jobs and transit, and giving neighborhood organizations an early and comprehensive role in planning.
In collaboration with the City of Minneapolis, the Center for Neighborhoods coordinates the Corridor Housing Initiative with support from a team of technical experts, the Family Housing Fund of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, and the Twin Cities Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC).
The award will be presented at the APA state planning conference in Alexandria at the end of September.
