Sanitary Sewer Improvements

2020 Sewer Main Repairs

13th Ave S

Project Status: Construction

Anticipated Start of Construction

September 2019

Scope of Project

Remove and replace sewer main along 13th Ave S from 31st St E to Lake St E.

Project Description

Remove and replace 259 ft of 12-in VCP sewer and adjacent manholes.

Traffic Impact

Minimal effect on residential and general traffic. A traffic control plan is available upon request.

Beard Ave S

CIP Status Stage 2: Design

June 2020

Scope of Project

Remove and replace sewer main along Beard Ave S from 51st St to 50th St W.

Project Description

Remove and Replace 160 LF of 9” VCP sanitary main with 10” VCP and connecting MHs. This will improve sanitary flow and reduce the necessary cleaning frequency.

Traffic Impact

 Minimal effect on residential and general traffic.

35th Ave NE and Tyler St NE

Scope of Project

Remove and replace storm sewer pipe on 35th Ave NE from Central Ave NE to Ulysses St NE and Tyler St NE from 35th Ave NE to 36th Ave NE.

Project Description

Public Works is coordinating implementation of storm drain projects from the 1NE watershed study with upcoming street and other improvement projects as feasible. (See https://www.mwmo.org/planning/northeast-stormwater-management-initiative/ for full 1NE watershed study)

The 35th Ave NE and Tyler St project is the second project to be implemented of the study. About 4300 feet of storm drain pipe will be replaced with larger pipes at this location to reduce surface flooding. Manholes and catch basins in the project area will also be replaced. 

Traffic Impact

During construction, residents, businesses, and visitors may face: traffic detours, noise, vibration, and dust in work areas. The following temporary impacts may include: lane restrictions, intersection reductions, parking restrictions, and/or revised pedestrian and bicycle routes. Residents will have access to their property throughout construction. We will continue to post construction and traffic detour information.

15th St E

Remove and replace sewer main along 15th St E, from 3rd Ave S to 4th Ave S.

15th St E Sewer Repair Map

Project Description

Remove, replace and reroute segments of brick, ductile iron, and reinforced concrete pipe along 15th St E. This will improve sanitary flow and reduce the necessary cleaning frequency.

Traffic Impact

 Traffic entering onto I-94W may be affected.

30th Ave S

Wenonah West

CIP Status Stage 2: Design

Scope of Project

Remove and replace sewer main  and install a Lift Station at the intersection of 54th St E and 29th Ave S.

Project Description

The pipe connecting to the MCES Interceptor is too low and it is backing up city sewer flow when these pipes are near or over capacity. By rehabilitating the pipes and adding a lift station, it will alleviate future sewer backup.

2019 Sewer Main Repairs

Hoyer Heights

Project Status: Completed

This project was completed in 2019.

Scope of Project

Remove and replace sewer main in multiple location within the Hoyer Heights subdivision of the Waite Park neighborhood.

Project Description

Abandon existing sewers from backyards and relocate into the streets via open-cut excavation. Remove and replace sewer main and adjacent manholes.

Traffic Impact

 Minimal effect on residential and general traffic.

Humboldt Ave S

Project Status: Completed

This project was completed in 2019.

Scope of Project

Remove and replace sewer main along Humboldt Ave S, from 28th St W to Lagoon Ave.

Project Description

Remove and replace 140 ft of 12-in VCP sewer and adjacent manholes.

Traffic Impact

 Minimal effect on residential and general traffic.

Lake Harriet Pkwy

Project Status: Completed

This project was completed in 2019.

Scope of Project

Remove and replace sewer main along Lake Harriet Pkwy, from 44th St W to 46th St W.

Project Description

Remove and replace 122 ft of 9-in VCP sewer and adjacent manholes.

Traffic Impact

 Minimal effect on residential and general traffic.

McNair Ave S

Project Status: Completed

This project was completed in 2019.

Scope of Project

Remove and replace sewer main along McNair Ave N, from Upton Ave N to Thomas Ave N.

Project Description

Remove and replace 215 ft of 9-in VCP sewer and adjacent manholes.

Traffic Impact

 Minimal effect on residential and general traffic.

Plymouth Ave N

Project Status: Completed

This project was completed in 2019.

Scope of Project

Remove and replace sewer main along Plymouth Ave N, from Washington Ave N to 2nd St N.

Project Description

Remove and replace 415 ft of 24-in brick pipe with VCP. This will eliminate existing settled, compacted debris in the pipe, and repair VCP sewer and adjacent manholes.

Traffic Impact

 Will affect general traffic.

Future Sewer Main Repairs

2nd St N

CIP Status Stage 2: Design

April 2020

Scope of Project

Remove and replace sewer main along 2nd St N from Broadway Ave to 10th Ave N.

Project Description

Remove and replace 3,000 ft of brick pipes with VCP. This will eliminate existing cracks, holes, and fractures.

Traffic Impact

 Traffic will be closed on 2nd St N and redirected onto Washington Ave N.

 Storm Sewer Repairs

Alley Storm Repairs

CIP Status Stage 2: Design

Scope of Project

We’ll be replacing the existing underground storm infrastructure in various alleys throughout Minneapolis.

Project Description

Alley storm drains are some of the oldest pipes in the city's system, and they need to be repaired. Replacing the existing pipes will prevent failure and future drainage issues. We'll also replace the alley surfaces affected by this work.

Alley locations for 2020 include:

  • 33rd Ave N alley at Newton Ave
  • 42nd St alley at Minnehaha Ave
  • 46th St alley at Hiawatha Ave
  • 51st St alley at 39th Ave S
  • 35th St alley at 17th Ave S
  • 39th Ave alley at Dupont Ave N

Traffic Impact

The alley will be closed to traffic. However, crews on site will provide access to your garage if required. Please give them ample time to provide access if there is an excavation next to your property.
