Hennepin Uptown Reconstruction 

Between 2018 and 2019, the City of Minneapolis is reconstructing Hennepin Ave in the Uptown area between Lake St and 36th St W.

Background

In addition to addressing aging street infrastructure, the goals of this project include improving the overall experience for users of this corridor by enhancing the pedestrian realm, making the corridor more walkable and transit and bicycle friendly, calming traffic and creating a more livable environment for all. The City Council-approved street layout for Hennepin Avenue can be found under the "Project Documents" section.

Starting at 36th Street West up to 31st Street Weston the east side of the street, then the west side.

Activity block between 31st Street West and Lake Street will start after the Uptown Art Fair is over.

June 14, 2019 Update

Work completed in the past week between Lake St and 31st St W

  • 95% trees planted (there are a few species which need to go in in the fall)
  • Electrical work complete
  • Ground in pavement marking will be completed in the next few weeks
  • Transverse sawing completed

Work completed this past few weeks between 31st St W and 36th St W

  • Trees planted
  • Sealcoating started today, 6-14
  • Sod installed (it was called to my attention that a few areas remain, we are working to get the landscape company out to finish these areas)
  • Ground in pavement marking installation will be completed in the next few weeks
  • Permanent striping next week

June 7, 2019 Update

Overview

We are on schedule to reopen the roadway today, June 7th! Buses will return to Hennepin tomorrow (June 8) morning. There are still a few miscellaneous items remaining but this work should be completed over the next month and will only minimally impact pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Work completed in the past week between Lake St and 31st St W

  • Trees planted
  • Electrical work almost complete-have some minor work
  • Push button pedestal at the NW corner of Hennepin and 31st was relocated
  • Ground in pavement marking (crosswalks, stop bars and bicycle symbols) installation started
  • Finish punch list work – 95% complete

Work completed in the past week between 31st St W and 36th St W

  • Trees planted (there are a few that will need to be planted in the fall)
  • Transverse sawing 80% complete (the last block will be done Saturday June 8)
  • Sod installed (it was called to my attention that a few areas remain to be sodded)
  • 30’ lights all installed
  • Seal coat (need to be done in the warmer months, shooting for the next few weeks)
  • Ground in pavement marking (crosswalks, stop bars and bicycle symbols) installation started

May 24, 2019 Update

Work in the Past Few Weeks

Between Lake St and 31st St W

I imagine may people are wondering about the extensive removals and reinstallation of the roadway at and near the cross walk. It was determined that while the project has the road closure in effect, the City will make some adjustments to the mid-block crosswalk on the activity block (Lake to 31st Street West) to refine the elevations and improve the pedestrian experience. This work is going well and should be completed in time to open things up on June 7th (weather permitting). Crews will also work this Saturday to make up for the rain this past week.

  • Finished water connection at Suburban World
  • Finished roadway, C&G and sidewalk restoration for Suburban World Work (City of Minneapolis)
  • Removed temporary sidewalk asphalt

There has been a lot going happening on Hennepin Ave! The following work has been completed on Hennepin Ave:

Lake St to 31st St W

  • Finishing up water connection at Suburban World today – there was an issue in this connection
  • Temporary asphalt has been removed
  • Additional electrical work has begun
  • Structural Soil and tree pit soil installation completed

31st St W to 36th St W

  • Began digging tree pits
  • Started sewer punch list work
  • Finished pouring carriage walks
  • Began concrete punch list work

What's Coming Up?

Lake St to 31st St W

  • Restoration of sidewalk, curb and roadway at Suburban World - start Monday 5-20
  • Begin pouring sidewalk behind curb and installing tree grates

May 9, 2019 Update

Roadway Closures

On May 6, 2019 Hennepin Ave (Lake St W - 31st St W) closed to allow the completion of multiple construction operations.  The closure is anticipated to last through June 7.

On May 13, 2019, Hennepin Ave (31st St W to 36th St W) will be closed to thru traffic, this closure is anticipated to last for 4 weeks.  The approved vehicular detour is Lake St to Lyndale Ave S to 36th St W. This will allow crews to finish up work in a safe and expeditious manner.

June 22, 2018 Update

Construction Activities Completed over the Past Week

  • Pavement removals between 35th and 36th, and 33rd to 34th
  • Signal removal at 34th, 4-way stop signs have been installed
  • Sanitary bypass set up between 33rd and 34th
  • Began installation of the new sanitary main between 33rd and 34th

Construction Activities for Next Week

  • Complete sanitary sewer main installation and connections between 33rd and 34th
  • Continue pavement removals between 34th and 35th, and 33rd to 31st
  • Begin water work between 33rd and 36th, Temporary short term water shut offs are tentatively planned for 6-28 and will occur in the late night hours, impacted residents and businesses will be notified in advance.
  • Remove traffic signal at 31st and Hennepin and install a temporary 4-way stop
  • Begin removing abandoned gas main starting at 36th and working north

Look Ahead

  • Water work between 36th and 34th St W begins week of June 25th
  • Storm sewer work at 36th St W begins week of July 2 (provided that the structures have been fabricated and delivered)

Miscellaneous

  • Buses will be rerouted around the food trucks on Sunday June 24th for the Food Truck Festival, this should not impact the stops on Girard and Fremont between 31st and 36th
  • There will be no need to alter the traffic detour to accommodate the Food Truck
  • Festival

  • On Sunday June 10th, the north-south leg of the detour route will be moved from Lyndale Ave S to Bryant Ave S to accommodate the Lyndale Open Streets event; on Monday June 11 the Lyndale route will be reinstatedHennepin Ave buses going south of 31st St W have been detoured between 31st and 36th St W on Girard (southbound) and Fremont (northbound)

Design Phase Updates

January 5, 2017: Public Works is hosting a project open house with the CARAG and ECCO neighborhoods on January 25, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at the Bryant Square Park Recreation Center (3101 Bryant Avenue South). All are welcome to attend.

January 6, 2017: The project will be presented to the Bicycle Advisory Committee Engineering Subcommittee on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 between 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Colonial Warehouse Building, 212 3rd Avenue North, Suite 404 and the Pedestrian Advisory Committee, Infrastructure & Engineering Subcommittee on Thursday, January 19, 2017 between 4:30-6:00 p.m. at Minneapolis City Hall, 350 5th Street South, Room 212.

January 25, 2017: Those interested in the Hennepin Avenue reconstruction project are encouraged to take this short, 10-minute survey about the project corridor. Your input is important and will help inform the design of the street.

January 26, 2017: The materials presented at the January 25, 2017 open house have been posted in the Open House #1 section above..

February 24, 2017: Public Works is hosting a second project open house with the CARAG and ECCO neighborhoods on March 9, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at the Bryant Square Park Recreation Center (3101 Bryant Avenue South). Project staff will be on hand to share different concepts for the street, seek feedback, and answer questions. All are welcome to attend.

March 9, 2017: The project will be presented to the Bicycle Advisory Committee Engineering Subcommittee on Tuesday, March 14, 2017 between 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Colonial Warehouse Building, 212 3rd Avenue North, Suite 404 and the Pedestrian Advisory Committee, Infrastructure & Engineering Subcommittee on Thursday, March 16, 2017 between 4:30-6:00 p.m. at Minneapolis City Hall, 350 5th Street South, Room 212.

March 10, 2017: The materials presented at the March 9, 2017 open house have been posted in the Open House #2 section above, including concept options for the design of the Lake Street to 31st Street segment and 31st Street to 36th Street segment. Based on community feedback and further technical review, Public Works will select a preferred concept and provide a recommendation to City Council this spring. Please provide feedback on the corridor concepts to project staff by March 27, 2017 - see contact details below.

April 13, 2017: Public Works will hold a third informational meeting to present the recommended concept for Hennepin Avenue and discuss next steps for the project. This meeting is a follow up to two project open house meetings held in January and March of 2017. The third meeting will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2017 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. and will include a presentation by project staff.

April 28, 2017: The materials presented at the April 27, 2017 project meeting have been posted in the Project Meeting #3 section above, including the staff recommended layout for Hennepin Avenue. Public Works anticipates seeking City Council approval for the layout in June 2017.

June 30, 2017: City Council approved the staff recommended layout for Hennepin Avenue. The approved layout can be found under the "Project Documents" section.

November 2, 2017: Note to all businesses, residents, stakeholders, and concerned parties, exploratory boring work will be done on Hennepin Avenue between Lake and 36th Street on Monday, November 6. Permits have been obtained and NO PARKING signs will be in place. Please see the attachment for more information. Thank you for your interest and cooperation.

February 21, 2018: A Public Hearing for the project will be held during the Transportation and Public Works Committee of the Minneapolis City Council on Tuesday February 27th, 2018 at 10:00am. The hearing will be held at Minneapolis City Hall, Room 317, 350 5th Street South.

Two pre-assessment public meetings are scheduled:

  • February 21, 2018, 6-7pm at Bryant Square Park Recreation Center, 3101 Bryant Avenue South

  • February 22, 2018, 9:30-10:30am at Walker Library, Calhoun Meeting Room, 2880 Hennepin Avenue South

The same information will be presented at both meetings. The main purpose for the meetings will be to discuss assessments. We will provide information on how the assessments are calculated, when they would start to be collected, and how they would be collected.
