Mid-City Industrial Reconstruction

The City of Minneapolis will be reconstructing several street segments totaling 2.2 miles in the Mid-City Industrial Neighborhood in 2019 and 2020. The project area is generally bound on the north by Interstate 35-W, on the south by E Hennepin Avenue, on the east by the city limits, and on the west by Johnson Street NE.

Project Phases

Phase I work began in 2018 and Phase II work began in 2019. See details about the two phases of this project below.

Phase I

Phase I of the Mid-City Industrial project includes segments of the following streets, which are scheduled to be finished in 2019:

  • Arthur St NE
  • Cleveland St NE
  • Broadway St NE
  • Kennedy St NE (west of Taft St NE)
  • Summer St NE
  • Taft St NE
  • Traffic St NE

All of these segments total 1.5 miles in the Mid-City Industrial neighborhood.

  • Concrete pavement removal at Winter and R Intersection.
  • Storm sewer at Winter and R Intersection.
  • Winter and R St intersection subgrade and muck excavation.
  • Concrete pavement removal at Winter and Hoover.
  • Start storm and sanitary work at Winter and Hoover.
  • Restoration north of Broadway.
  • Xcel Energy relocated 4 Xcel poles on Hoover between Hennepin and Winter; 3 remaining east side between Winter and Hoover.
  • Spring St opened for traffic Monday.

Week of May 13, 2019

  • Hoover St. north of Broadway Subbase prep completed. Curb and gutter, driveways, and half of roadway concrete pavement completed.
  • Sanitary bypass system setup and running.
  • Start install of sanitary sewer at Hoover and Spring. Pipe installation eastward on Spring
  • CenterPoint/ Michels – gas main line installation on progress on Hoover St NE north of Spring ST NE

Proposed Work for the Week of May 20, 2019

  • Pavement removal on Winter and Spring
  • Continue sanitary sewer installation eastward on Spring
  • Sidewalk prep on Hoover north of Broadway
  • Concrete work will continue hover north of Broadway
  • Start sanitary sewer work at Hoover and Winter
  • Xcel Energy will start relocating the power poles
  • Gas main installation will be done.

Week of May 6, 2019

  • All the storm sewer work on Hoover St – north of Broadway St has been completed.
  • the utilities crew has completed the sanitary sewer manhole replacement at the same location. Hence all the underground utility work at this location has been completed.
  • The subgrade and the base on Hoover St – north of Broadway has been prepared, and the road is ready to be paved.
  • The sanitary bypass on Hoover St, Spring St and Godward St had all its pipe fused this week and crossings at major intersections along this stretch have been made. Hence, the sanitary bypass has its pumps and pipe in place and is ready to be tested.
  • CenterPoint/ Michels – gas main line installation on progress on Hoover St NE north of Spring ST NE

Proposed work for week of May 13, 2019

  • The pumps for the sanitary bypass are set to be tested on Monday, 5/13.
  • Sanitary sewer work will start on Spring St on Monday, 5/13.
  • The subcontractor for concrete paving will be on site starting Tuesday, 5/14 ready for concrete work on Hoover St – north of Broadway St. Curb and gutter is planned for Tuesday, driveway aprons and tie-ins for Wednesday, and paving the roadway for rest of the week is what is planned.

Week of April 29, 2019

Our crews:

  • Removed concrete pavement, curb and gutter, and driveways on Hoover north of Broadway completed
  • Started removing concrete pavement on Hoover between Winter and Kennedy, and also down Spring
  • Installing storm sewer on Hoover north of Broadway
  • Roadway subbase preparation started

Centerpoint Energy crews continued installing gas main; and will be starting individual services next week
