2012 Alley Renovation Program
Alley renovation uses an asphalt overlay to improve the quality of the pavement surface. These projects are necessary to provide high quality alley surfaces and maintain positive alley drainage. If this work is not done, it is likely that more expensive and work intensive reconstruction will need to be performed in the future.

Construction Start Date:
This work will take place during the summer and fall of 2012.
Length of Construction:
The renovation work on an alley may extend for up to three days. These days are generally not consecutive. On the first day, if there is an existing asphalt surface, the top 2” is milled off. This is done by using a machine that grinds off the top layer of pavement. If the alley has a concrete surface, this step is omitted. The surface is then thoroughly cleaned and swept. On the second work day, a new asphalt surface is placed over the existing pavement.
During the following calendar year, the alley will be seal coated. Seal coating provides additional protection to the alley, extending the service life of the asphalt surface. It involves placing asphalt emulsion on the pavement and spreading chips, such as granite, over the emulsion. The surface is rolled with specialized compaction equipment. After a few days, the alley is swept to pick up any excess chips.
Impact to Residents:
The alley will be closed to traffic during a portion of the work. If milling is required, partial access will be permitted to the alley. The mill will be a moving obstruction. It is recommended that you move your vehicle if you know that you will need it. When asphalt is placed, there will be equipment and a required cooling time. This will impact garage and parking access along the alley for a number of hours, and residents will need to move their cars in advance of the asphalt work.
Residents will be notified in advance of the work. This will be done through hand delivering letters to residents along the alley. This letter will include the date of the work. The City will also use its automated calling system. There will also be coordination with the Sanitation Department. The work will be scheduled to minimize conflict between the resurfacing work and with weekly sanitation pick-ups. Residents will not need to take any action in regards to sanitation pick-ups.
