Project Details

Lane changes will include bike lanes in both directions on most block segments of the project. Sharrows will be included where bike lanes cannot be striped. It will also include the removal of one travel lane on 7th/10th Street N in the southeast bound direction between Olson Memorial Highway and Twins Way, as well as the removal of a travel lane in each direction on Oak Lake/10th Avenue N between 7th Street N and 5th Street N.

Parking changes will take place on 7th Street N between Oak Lake Avenue and Olson Memorial Highway, where parking will be removed on both sides of the street. Parking will also be removed on the northwest side of 10th Avenue N between Washington Avenue and 5th Street.

Striping will be a combination of paint and permanent tape.

Innovation will be included in two ways on the project. A double sided bike lane will be striped on 10th Street N (a one-way street) approaching Twins Way, in order to facilitate bicyclists merging from the right side bike lane to the left side bike lane. Colored green conflict zones will be striped in two locations where motorists must cross over the bike lane to enter a right turn lane. These locations are 7th Street N at 6th Avenue N and Lyndale Avenue N (both in the northwest bound direction). The latter treatment was granted experimental approval from the FHWA (pdf). For more details read the City’s request to experiment (pdf).

Bike racks will be installed at sixteen locations (pdf).

Project Updates

November 3, 2010

Late this summer bike lanes were striped on 7th Street N between Plymouth Avenue and Olson Memorial Highway. This was done as part of the City’s mill and overlay of 7th Street, as well as the opening of the 7th Street/Van White intersection. In some locations the roadway was milled and overlaid to the curb in order to make the 5’-6’ bike lane one surface (as opposed to a 2’ concrete gutter with 3’-4’ of asphalt).

7th Street N was also striped with a bike lane in the northwest bound direction between 2nd Avenue N and Olson Memorial Highway, as part of re-striping for the Twins Ballpark.

Parking on 7th Street N between Oak Lake Avenue and Olson Memorial Highway will be removed after the parking ramp of the Wells Fargo Bank is reopened. Until that time motorists may park in the bike lane area.

The remainder of the project is anticipated to be completed in 2011.

March 1, 2010

A flyer (pdf) has been distributed to properties along 10th Avenue N between Washington Avenue and 5th Street, on the northwest side. The flyer describes parking removal which is currently under consideration.
