How do I apply for a homestead classification?How do I apply for a homestead classification?New homeowners in the City of Minneapolis may submit an application for a homestead by mail, fax, email or in the Assessor’s office after they move into their new home. Please fill out and submit a homestead application to the City Assessor’s office providing information that you own the property and that you, or a qualifying relative, occupy the property. See below for the list of required documentation that must accompany your application.
Documents Required for Homesteading
Proof that shows the relationship of the Qualifying Relative occupant to the property owner includes documents such as: birth certificates, marriage licenses, adoption papers, court orders, etc. City of Minneapolis Homestead Application (pdf) Additional owners’ Supplemental Application (pdf) Applying for Homestead Instruction Sheet (pdf) After the Assessor’s office has received the documentation necessary to process your homestead, a homestead affidavit will be generated and mailed to you. Upon receipt of the affidavit, please verify that the information on the affidavit is correct, and then each owner-occupant must sign it. The signed affidavit must be returned to the City Assessor's Office before December 15th in the year of the homestead request. Failure to sign and return the affidavit before December 15th will result in the property being classified as non-homestead. The signed affidavit must be returned by U.S. mail or in person to the Assessor’s office. It CAN NOT be returned by fax or email. |
