World Spay Day is a Success

On February 26, 2013, Minneapolis Animal Care & Control celebrated World Spay Day to bring attention to pet overpopulation and promote spaying and neutering as effective and humane ways to reduce the number of animals put down in animal shelters across the U.S. each year. We held a Spay-a-thon at the animal shelter and sterilized 96 animals between 8am and 6pm. These included community members’ pets as well as shelter animals.

It is estimated that six to eight million animals enter animals shelters each year. Sadly, four million of these pets are humanely euthanized annually due to pet overpopulation, including 90,000 in Minnesota. Spaying and neutering is the only 100 percent proven way to reduce these numbers and save animals’ lives.

Minneapolis Animal Care & Control proudly partnered with Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program to co-host this event. Chuck & Don’s Pet Food Outlet and Royal graciously donated pet food for all pet owners who participated in the day. Throughout Minnesota, six different groups participated in the event under the umbrella organization Minnesota Partnership for Animal Welfare (MNPAW).

Spay & Neuter: A Minneapolis Partnership

Minneapolis Animal Care & Control is proud to announce an exciting partnership with Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program (MNSNAP).  On March 20, MNSNAP staff performed their first spay and neuter surgeries inside MACC's veterinary clinic.  The Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program's mobile veterinary clinic -- the first of its kind in Minnesota -- operates seven (7) days a week and is often parked in MACC's parking lot once a week to serve the community.  Through this new public-private partnership, MNSNAP will schedule surgeries for low income pet owners Tuesdays through Friday in hopes of further addressing the severe overpopulation of pets in our city.

Do you live in North Minneapolis (Ward 4 or 5)?  You are eligible for a FREE SPAY / NEUTER services (pdf) for your pet.

MNSNAP provides low-cost spay / neuter services for low-income pet owners.  For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact MNSNAP.  Pet Owners MUST register. Learn more about Free Spay/Neuter Services for Ward 5 (pdf)

Why is it so important?

Between six and eight million cats and dogs enter our nation's shelter system each year.  Animal Shelters cannot save or support this huge number of accidental litters, strays and offspring of family pets.  As a result, nearly four million animals are humanely euthanized annually.  It is estimated that 90,000 dogs and cats are humanely euthanized each year in Minnesota due to overpopulation.  Spaying and neutering is the only 100 percent proven way to reduce these numbers and save animal's lives.
